I read this as a pre-publication proof and was astounded by Quinn's talent for bringing her characters and stories to life! I'm a sucker for a strong hero with a shady past and gladiator Arius fits this description precisely. Quinn tells her tale through the perspectives of different protagonists and antagonists, and this really puts an interesting spin on everything. All of the sub-plots weave together into a brilliant crescendo and had me desperate to keep on reading even after I had to leave the last page. An awesome debut.

Went looking for the book, but found the graphic novel instead. It added to what promised to be an already wonderful story. Haven't seen the movie yet so I don't know how they would compare to each other

At points I needed to stop reading to take a breath from all the laughing. It was actually that funny.

This heartwrending tale personalizes the plight of so many Lithuanians who were taken from their homes for the Russians, brutalized, and then sent into labor camps (community farms)to toil under horrid conditions. Though filled with scenes of unspeakable horror, the novel also recounts the quickly formed kinships of those who had so recently been strangers. The stark differences between the egotism of some in power and the kindness of others is evident as the group of "criminals" are moved from Lithuania to Siberia.

Absolutely Amazing... Vinge, you've done it again. After I read A Fire Upon the Deep I thought this book would pale in comparison. Finally I finished Deepness in the Sky (it's like 760 pages), and after losing sleep for many nights because I just couldn't put it down, I have come to the conclusion that this novel just may be better than the first.

About as good as any serial romance has a right to be. They're silly, simple, escapist reading. This one is smut-free, which is a rare thing in the serial romance world.

I read this because it is a popular work by two very big names (Keeney and Raiffa) in my own technical field, decision analysis. Since I often have to explain technical ideas for a general audience and recommend courses of action to non-specialists, I wanted to see how K&R do that. So I thought it a great little book, and recommend it highly, except for one curious lapse. It recommends eliciting utility functions without using reference lotteries. Since utility functions capture attitude toward risk, my understanding and belief is that they cannot properly be elicited without explcitly considering chance events, i.e. lotteries. If this is not an inexplicable goof, then I'd have to say that it is a conscious simplification, motivated by the tedious difficulty of elicitation with reference lotteries. In fact, I usually recommend assuming risk neutrality and skipping the lotteries, at least for the first pass through a problem, unless risk is the primary source of difficulty in the problem (as it often is in petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals). Other than that, I thought this was a fine book.
As valuable for the fashion inspiration as for the amazing stories of women in childbirth.
I can usually get through all of Jodi Picoult's books quickly and find them very enjoyable. This one was the exception. I had always chosen other titles and authors, but finally picked this one up. I should have trusted my gut. The timeline and different voices in this book made me crazy. I didn't know when all the events were happening, and in the first chapters, there were characters talked about I had no idea who they were?! Honestly took half the book to even figure out what I was reading about. The characters were boring, and the ending was pretty predictable.
