What started as funny soon became "tarsome" ... the shallow competition of these villagers. Lucia drove me nuts. Georgie was the only redeeming character of the lot.

A fantastic debut novel from Lynn Flewelling. I was browsing through my local bookstore and struck up a conversation with one of the booksellers and she recommended this book to me, stating that it was excellent and that she was up all night thinking about the story and it's characters. I have to agree with her and in fact I did the same. I actually fell in love with the main characters, all of them being very likeable. The story gripped me right the way through to the end, and i can't wait to purchase and read the other books in the series. If you are a fan of David Eddings' Belgariad and or Mallorean series, then please give Lynn Flewelling a chance.

This book made me appreciate Chagall even more than I previously did. It also made me realize that you cannot just glance at a Chagall but you need to really pay attention. There is so much there, so much visual information to feed the painting.

This book had a sweet message. I liked how the story captured a short moment in time and illustrated friendship and learning. The illustrations were nice as well, I'm fond of Jon J. Muth's watercolors. I'd probably recommend. *Taken from my book reviews blog: http://reviewsatmse.blogspot.com/2009...

Such a weird book, interesting idea but with boring parts in the middle that made me forget what I was even reading about...weird and then the ending was very abrupt and I could kind of see that it was going that way....maybe a movie about it would be better?

Must be read with candles, jazz, and strong black coffee. Then let your inner Beatnik loose and explore the open road of life. Warning: May be too hip for some readers. August 2007: It's the 50th anniversary of this American classic and I decided to listen to it on CD on a road trip. I last read it about 25 years ago. My older, wiser self saw the story in a whole new light...here was Sal and Dean and the gang traveling the country without having a reason to be at any certain place. They were always with each other but always lonely. Sal appreciated the natural beauty of the country but always ended up in the grit and grime of city life. And for the life of me I could no longer see what Sal saw in Dean. Dean was a LOSER! In the scene where all of the women were giving Dean the cold shoulder...I was right there with them. Dude! You are a father now...GROW UP! I guess that's what 25 years will do to ones perspective. Favorite line: "...and don't you know God is Pooh Bear..."

Before you are allowed to post a review of this novel, I’m going to have to ask you to present an official id. An official id with your dob on it. I’m sorry, but I just don’t think a person under fifty can really appreciate this book and I’m not sure those of you under fifty would have the patience to read a book where the biggest plot points are repairing a scratch on her new car. Emily is an elderly widow, in the last years of her life. Her family, except for an elderly sister-in-law, lives far away and seldom visits. Her friends are rapidly dying off. The highlights of Emily’s week are Wednesdays when the maid comes in to clean and to eating at an inexpensive diner using discount coupons with her sister-in-law. Emily both enjoys her life and finds it more difficult each day to do the simple tasks she needs to do. I found this book to be a lovely picture of a small life well lived. Here’s a tiny sample: “A week later, floundering, as was her habit in the wake of their leaving, she took Rufus out for his constitutional one bright, chilly morning only to discover, on the slate square of sidewalk directly in front of their steps, like a hex or a warning, a pair of black spary-painted arrows pointing downhill, bracketing the number 392. She peered around at the empty lawns and driveways and porches, as if whoever was responsible were watching. Rufus looked up at her, wondering why they’d stopped. She would have suspected gang graffiti, which had been a problem in the alley behind Sheridan, except it was small and artlessly done. Its sloppiness looked official, the harbinger of some public works project, a new sewer line or fiber-optic cable that might intrude on her summer. Besides marring her front walk, the inscrutable numerals promised a chaos she was powerless to stop, and sent her off up Grafton, frowning at her bad luck.”

Good for anyone planning on having children. Everything she says is all true, and knowing what to expect before it happens makes reality easier to cope with.

Devastating. I didn't "like" any of the characters - these were all people I would avoid in real life and I prefer at least one sympathetic person in what I read. I didn't feel that the two women could really be friends, but I guess I didn't find it totally unbelievable either. The 4 stars are because the author brought me into the grip of Alzheimer's with terrifying talent.

Cry. Fest. I have never in my life cried so much while reading a book. I'm not even completely sure that I cried so much when watching Titanic for the first time. Every kind of tears: sad tears, happy tears, bittersweet tears, spiritual tears, this-resonates-so-deep-it-hurts-a-little tears. Considering the story was about a group of women bound together only by the fact that their husbands were in the same deployment to Afghanistan, it's not surprising that the story caused a lot of tears, nor that the story was difficult to read at times. What is surprising (to me, at least) was that the difficult parts had nothing to do with the deployment. The hardest things to read were the inner monologue moments, early on, before the women got to know each other. Their heads were full of the self-deprecating thoughts we all have, and it was very hard to read. (think of hanging around a Debbie Downer for the first half of the book... kind of like that) Granted, these thoughts are true-to-life, and that is part of what made it so hard to read. But once the women started to open up to each other and really lean on one another, they grew in personal strength and the inner monologues were no longer so irritating. In fact, if I had to pinpoint one major complaint about the book, it would be that I wish there had been more in between the big emotional wallop (about three quarters of the way in) and the end. I wanted to see more development from Brenda and from Jessie; while I did get the feeling that they were heading in certain direction, some confirmation of that would have been nice. Though I do appreciate how difficult it must be to juggle five main characters, and I can understand why she pared it down to three main characters and two supporting. The characters were so very, very real. I saw pieces of myself, or my sister, or my mother, or my friends in every one of them. Nothing was a caricature, but there were pieces of real life everywhere. The things we all struggle with, the concerns and insecurities we all have were there, but so were the strengths and the will to do right. This is the kind of story that pushes you to action, even if the action is as simple as a prayer or hugging your kids a little tighter. I was reminded of all that I have, and all that I still have to work towards. It was a beautiful tribute to the families of our troops and a deeply stirring reminder of what they are protecting with their lives. I do feel the need to mention that if you are not LDS, or are not very familiar with the LDS culture and lifestyle, you very well may not understand most of this book. The very essence of the story relies on the spirituality, faith and lifestyles of LDS women, and if you aren't familiar with our methods of prayer or our belief system, much of the book will seem foreign. If you are LDS, the spirituality is so seamlessly and beautifully woven into the narrative that you will find your faith strengthened just by reading this. Parental Advisories Sex 0/5: Since the men are all overseas, and all the women remain faithful, there's no sex at all Language 0/5: Though some funny Utah euphemisms are used :) Violence 2/5: The constant threat of war hangs over the story, and several conversations turn to the violence that the men are facing. One character battles severe depression, including a suicide attempt and some self-mutilation. Substance Abuses 2/5: A teen sneaks out and comes home with alcohol on her breath more than once. A character is found to be in possession of street drugs. A character attempts suicide by deliberately overdosing on pain pills. While the book is quite clean, the overall tone is extremely intense, and not something I recommend for children who cannot handle a mature and frank discussion about life and death.
