Amazing. A departure from Eggers' typical style, this book nonetheless retained his creativity and ingenuity. Books like this are riveting because of their rootedness in the realities we cannot comprehend. It is one thing to read about the crisis in Sudan in the newspaper, but to read the account of a life lived in the midst of that crisis is another thing entirely. It makes me want to take action - a sign of a really well-spun tale.

Finished reading this the other night (didn't get to it as soon as I would have liked). I enjoyed it but would rather have read it when I wasn't in the middle of a school semester. There's a lot more to this book than it's slim size (173 pages, large-ish print) leads one to believe. The ex-literature-major inside me ached for more time to devote to this, as well as for an excellent professor to help sort through the different levels Gardner has layered. Alas, nursing school leaves little time for long, leisurely reads so I feel I lost a lot in my reading. As I said, I enjoyed it, I just think I read it at the wrong time to fully appriciate it. I loved the basic idea behind it, though!

I found out what high barriers minimum-wage earners face. Didn't realize high rents for rooms/apartments were such a problem; explains why countries like Holland [still] subsidize rent for low incomes. Exp. painful to me to read how poor these workers' diet tends to be because of living in a room without kitchen facilities or because long commutes leave no time for actual shopping and cooking of food. Author makes a stab at showing subservient attitudes of some workers that -- along with the risk of being fired -- lead them to accept unfair employer demands. The reader called Renee rightly criticizes some of author's writing style, but still this is a fast-reading book that everyone in the middle class should read.

I learned SO much about paradoxes; loops; self-referencing; logic; holistic/reductionistic views; Bach (obviously) and even Zen. I particularly enjoyed the strange little stories with Achilles, the Tortoise, et al, and trying to understand the puzzle in each one.
