I wasn't assigned this book in high school and the only Melville I'd read was Bartleby, The Scrivener in Freshman English. I entered my forties feeling like I should read this American classic. I approached this task with the same relish as I would take medicine. I knew it would be good for me, but I thought it would be unpleasant. Bo, was I in for a surprise. I found this to be one of the best books I've ever read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I lost myself in the story even though I'd seen the movie with Gregory Peck and knew the story.I have become interested in whaling and many other aspects of history of the 19th century. I can't say enough about this book.

I think CivilWarLand in Bad Decline was the first set of short stories I have ever read. And George Saunders wowed me with these. I was just coming into reading for fun when I read these stories and they were so modern - the weird stories and the writing - i had never read anything like them before and instantly loved them.
Amazing, amazing, amazing story. Completely touching and heart breaking and heart warming!!!!

Great book! A fun read without being totally trash. Makes suburban motherhood seem all the more perilous a task to take on! I'm dying to watch the movie now.

It's a fun, light read, with a mishmash of literary, philosophical and scientific quotes. At times I found it superficial, at times I found the tone irritating. I liked the chapter about Iceland the best; their way of dealing with failure and misery makes me want to live there.

Guhrke has a talent for writing three-dimensional characters with very strong personalities (read: stubborn), but manages to keep them from veering into "annoying" territory. Beatrix and Will are another two such characters. Beatrix, especially, struck a chord with me. How many times have I, too, told myself that I was content to admire the view instead of jumping off the cliff? The story works well in the time period in which she sets it (Edwardian), as the plot would seem out of place in any other year (although I think some of the attitudes espoused by her characters might actually fit better if they were set another 15 years in the future). Several of the characters from earlier books make a reappearance, and the you can easily see future stories in the making.
Perfect (: I love Jem.

Tried to read this and the other two parts, but mostly skimmed through them. I could not find the relationship between the two women, their battles or the main character's reactions to these battles convincing, and their final reconciliation was terribly rushed. However, now that Kevis has explained that this is a prequel I may try the full book as it does seem to get good reviews.

Pretty interesting- in depth analysis of "revenge of the nerds" "freeks and geeks" and goes into the origin of the term "nerd"- the author also talks about his own life, dungeons and dragons, anime, etc. funny and fact-filled
