I felt so smart when I read this book. It is a fascinating portrait of the Americas before the Europeans showed up. Seems that one of the largest cities in the world at one time was in Peru. And the people were incredibly advanced and populous. And then they got wiped out by disease, war and mysterious events. I think my favorite revelation from this book is that corn was developed in the Americas. All other grains, scientists have found the wild form of the plant that the domesticated version was developed from. But not corn. How did these people domisticate a plant that greatly affected the world? Great book. Not an easy or fast read. Be prepared to dedicate time and thought to it.

Just starting this with by Bible Study Group - but already amazed by the video we watched where Timothy Keller discusses the story. Looking forward to reading the book.

Beautifully written - I think Donna Jo Napoli's best book so far. A great story of Mona Lisa: the woman.

The part I liked the best was the the discussion of art at the end, and also the villanelle. Stephen Dedalus uses Aristotle's Poetics and also St Thomas Aquinas to express his aesthetic theory. A beautiful one. There is also a delectable description of sinning (in chapter 2, I think). Do read.

Another good story by my favorite author, in fact, like him so much that I plan on reading all of his Gabriel Allon books. This one was alittle slow in the beginning, but as always, finished up with an exciting ending. A huge bomb destroys the Israeli embassy in Rome and sinks any hope that Allon can live a placid life free of bloodshed.

The history of the creation of Rome. Lots of bloody warfare and traveling. Classic!
I didn't know very much about Hemingway before I started reading this book, but I LOVED "The Paris Wife". Knowing that this was a fictionalized account of real life events made it so much more interesting. I recently watched "Midnight in Paris" and was fascinated by the scenes depicting 1920's Paris. "A Moveable Feast" just got bumped up my TBR list. Fabulous book!

From the sterotypical, overly-shopped cover down to the manufactured plot, this book felt cliche. It wasn't so much bad as it was unspectacular. Sometimes that's the biggest disapointment of all. The characters were flat, the romance contrived and the plot was run-of-the-mill. Nothing too special here, unless this is your first re-telling of the 12 dancing princessses. If it is, by all means, enjoy the book. If not, you may as well move along.

I keep this thing on the shelf by my pillow to pick up whenever I feel like getting a good dose of erudition. I don't think I'll ever get through all of these essays, I'll just pick one at random and read for a few pages. Montaigne tends to jump to three or four subjects within the course of one essay and ending up somewhere completely different than where he started, so it's not like you miss anything by opening it at random. Who knew that the father of the essay was such a rambling, non-linear thinker?

If you sneak up behind someone and tightly place your arms around them, you are liable for false imprisonment, and perhaps battery. And here I thought it was how you said, "Hello."
