** spoiler alert ** I liked book one, "the red Siren" and thought that i would give the second book a chance as it was a continuing story. the red siren caught my attention more, but the continuing story of four sisters and their desire to find love and purpose reeled me in to the end. This time Hope, is a lost soul looking for love in physical affection rather than the real love of a Heavenly Father who is always there and offers everlasting love. Hope finds herself at the mercy of slave buyer when she trusts a man with her heart and blindly goes after him on a ship only to find that he is married and has been lying to her. Nathaniel, a common merchantman comes to her rescue by sacrificing his ship to buy Hope out of her trouble. They encounter a hurricane, pirates, and Hope's jealous "beau" before they safely make it back to her home. Hope accepts forgiveness from her H. father and his unfaltering love along with the belief that a honorable man like Nathaniel can love her even with her past sins. Nathaniel also struggles with his attraction to Hope, because she reminds him of his mother and her unyielding ways to be a mother and quit her harlot profession. The judgmental nature of believers is brought to light because it is taught to bring the sinners to repentance, but if God can forgive we have to find a way to forgive and forget also. The context of physical relations is referred to quite frequently.

Charles Barkley is a very animated character, and he is even more animated in his book. He actually has some good advice for young athletes and sound judgements on the state of professional sports as seen today. Not to mention Michael Wilbon does the introduction for him, so it must be good right?

My Scottish friend, whose British sense of humor I enjoy, recommended this book. Apparently, Robert Rankin is very popular in Great Britain. Well, I thought it was a ridiculous book!! I wasn’t very funny, except for two or three paragraphs and one joke – hardly worth the two hours of your life it will take to read the 360 pages of nonsense. In my opinion a complete waste of time.

So I feel this pressure to give this book more than 3 stars because of it's cultural standing in our society and the influence of the mini-series in the 1970s. And I was thinking I would give it 4 stars, but then the second half of the book dragged for me. It is a documentary of Haley's roots, beginning in Africa with Kunta Kinte, and I suppose like any family tree, there are periods of dynamic events and then periods of life as most people know it where we simply just get through our days, no matter what our situation. But these less exciting periods of Haley's family history prompted me to skim quite a bit. Historically and culturally, I do think that this book has a place in the Western literary canon. But personally, it was a book I began to not look forward to picking up as I moved further into the book.
