What an amazing book. I read it in a day and want to start again from the top. The author, Chris Cleave, weaves a marvelous tale and his sentences, metaphors, analogies are simply amazing! The dustcover of the book contains only five sentences: "This is the story of two women. Their lives collide one fateful day, and one of them has to make a terrible choice, the kind of choice we hope you never have to face. Two years later, they meet again – the story begins there … Once you have read it, you'll want to tell your friends about it. When you do,please don't tell them what happens. The magic is in how the story unfolds."

I don't know why I love this book so much. Well, maybe I do. It's because 1)it's a romance but the characters don't really do anything together. They don't even kiss in this book. In other words, it's not just a 300-page filler-around-sex-scenes. 2)Peters never dumbs down anything. Everyone here talks like they have a PhD, and even though the language is a little dated now, it doesn't feel too easy of a ride. The reader has to concentrate a little bit. 3)By reading a book like this, you learn a lot about the setting. I love when books instruct without boring the reader, and this one does. I didn't know anything about Copenhagen before this, but now I want to see it very badly. And 4)I am a huge fan of classic romp romance movies. This reads like a script that you would have seen in the 40's, with the banter, the propriety, the light twists and near-slapstick villians. It has a goofiness to it, a whimsical quality, but it charms. I've never read anything by Peters that I didn't like, though, so I realize I am biased.

Although the idea for the story was very creative, I didn't like how the book ended. The character development was excellent, and I really felt like I had a good understanding of the emotion behind their decision-making, and the difficulty they endured.

This book was both amazing and sad. It was remarkable that the author was willing to practically give up her life to care for an owl; a commitment that lasted nineteen years. However, I found it incredible sad at the same time. She is a better and more patient person than I could ever be. It's an amazing book and anyone with any inkling to learn about owls and real love should read it. Warning: the end will break your heart. The author and the owl go through rough times.

I listened to this one on Audible after seeing a good review, but had no preconceived ideas. I was totally engrossed in this high school girl's story and hey, is that guy a vampire? After I recommended it to my 14 year-old daughter, I found out that all her friends were loving it too.

Short, quiet and wonderful. If you've never read Murakami, this book would be a great place to start.
