That Clive Cussler is the greatest homophobic, perverse, women loathing writer of our time

I'm reading this in my Language Arts Class! It's a pretty good memoir, I just think there should be more riveting parts. It's not something that I would walk in the bookstore and buy for myself.

Yet another overrated read. I do get so tired of American readers continual obsession with "different" cultures creating hype around poorly written fiction. The jumps in narrative, p.o.v., place/time, don't read as experimental but merely sloppy. There isn't a single compelling character here and the continual jumps between p.o.v. - sometimes in mid-paragraph, make it difficult to keep the various characters apart. While I did finish it (at under 200 pages it's a short read) I can't recommend it to anyone. There are a very few (as in two) passages that transcend the dreck and reach something like literary language but they're soon lost in the surrounding mess that is this novel. So disappointing.

This would get 3 and a half stars from me. I enjoyed the story, really got a kick out of his adventures in Ireland, wished I had his luck in Vegas and hope to get a chance to go to the Cove in Thailand.

** spoiler alert ** I really enjoyed this book. I especially loved the secondary characters like Marta(I look forward to hearing more about her in the sequel), Lukasz,Alek, and Krysia. Emma/Anna had her moments for me. I love how she was willing to help out the resistance, which to me was the best part of the book-I wish the Jenoff would have gone more into what the characters involved in that instead of so much time on the Kommandant. I often got irratated with Emma/Anna's character becuase she out the resistance in danger so often for her own selfish benifits. The one charter throughout the book I could not stand was the kommandant. I know that as a reader we were supposed to sympathize with him but I couldnt bring myself to do it, especially after we find out about his wife and father in law. The idea behind the kommandant's character is great and I wish it could have been explored more on his end-his thoughts and feelings. To me he was a weak man, with very little reedeming qualities. A lot of reviews that I read have said that the kommandant was not strong enough to stand up to the horrors he saw, which is true, but that shouldnt make him a likeable character. Especially when he may have had the power and position to help, even if it would have meant his death. I could have respected him a lot more if he would have died fighting for the woman he supposedly loved, instead of being to weak to admit he loved a jew.

I really like these stories. Especially the way the author weaves not only location, but events as well as characters from story to story while keeping each one independent. I thoroughly enjoy Ms. Yates work and this is another winner.

This was a okay read to kill time on a Sunday. I still think it's sad that a book about black characters would have white people on the cover just to sell more books, I presume. Stupid.
