This book was really cute. My husband bought me the first three books for Christmas and I really enjoyed this one. It was set for a younger age group but was still fun. It's about a young boy whose whole family gets killed by demons. But, there is a whole mystery as to why. After he goes to live with his uncle he begins to learn about the family secrets and they are quite a revelation. http://www.paranormalchick.com/?p=94

I can't decide if I enjoyed American Gods more than I did Anansi Boys. Anansi Boys was hilarious; I cracked up laughing while I read it on my futon and scared the bejeezus out of my kitties. While American Gods was not as funny for sure, I think it was a much darker, dirtier, more epic story (and it definitely wasn't devoid of humor, either) and I liked how intricate the twists in the plot became.

I really really enjoyed Hades!! it is the sequel to Halo by Alexandra Adornetto. Once you start reading Hades you will not want to put it down until you have finished but then you can't wait for the next book after that. I would highly recommend this book to anyone but first you have to read Halo the first book in this trilogy.

I read "Pump Six" the eponymous short story as it was reprinted in a science fiction magazine and was immediately hooked by Bacigalupi's wry dystopian assessment of human nature. Many of these stories inhabit the same world and it is often difficult to distinguish whether or not they belong to the same canon. Regardless of their seeming integration with each other, each of these stories reads disturbingly well. Each character is fully realized and developed by the end of the story. While it is absolutely a world of discord Bacigalupi's characters inhabit, there are solid characters and plenty of subtly tragicomic moments to keep the pages turning. I closed the book with an "Amen" as the author's appraisal of the human condition is one I was very much able to identify with.
I have The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh published by Allen Lane, The Penguin Press. Selected and Edited by Ronald de Leeuw and translated by Arnold Pomerans. I bought this book in one of my trips to Amsterdam, from the Van Gogh Museum Bookstore. It is excellent! I have to choose the date I read. There are not several options. I read it in 1999 and then again several years later. I am still reading them!

A good follow up to the Hunger Games. It started off a bit slow and, I must say, had me a bit worried, but it picks up in the middle and from that point I couldn't put it down. Some of the plot developments and scenes are really brilliant. However, there were weak points. Most importantly, there are certain things that the reader can see coming a mile away, and one seriously wonders why our protagonist doesn't. This is particularly troubling since the book is written in first person, meaning everything we know, we know through Katniss. In fact, at times she seems stupidly obtuse simply as a plot technique - since for the most part she is a relatively intelligent girl. While this flaw existed in the first book, it becomes more pronounced and problematic in the second. However, if you can ignore this one flaw (which, by the way, I've noticed in a few other YA books and one wonders if perhaps it is a more general problem), this is a fun and intelligent read, and Collins does a brilliant job of keeping you engaged as well as being practically able to visualize what's going on, especially in the dramatic scenes.

I don't think I can ever look at a glass of water or my water bill the same again. Oh, how I appreciate the clean water that I can get right from my tap. I'll pay that quarterly bill with a little more thankful attitude. I found it fascinating that there were two camps (miasma and water born) arguing over the cause of cholera. Without modern day equipment it was difficult to pinpoint the cause of cholera as something that lives in water. It was also amazing to see how far science has come. I was surprised at the modern day inference that the author drew. The idea of a water born terrorism attack is frightening, but a possibility that we really need to be mindful of. It definately left me with something to think about. I may have given the book a 4, but I thought the author restated too many points. Because I listened to it as an audio version I kept having to check that I hadn't pushed the wrong button and went back tracks when I heard something that I had already heard.

I do not read many "romance" novels anymore but there are still a few writers that I haven't forgotten and whose series I await like an old friend. The Deadly Series by Brenda Joyce is one of these friends. The author pulled me in in the first installment and I have anxiously awaited each subsequent one. The mysteries may not be all that complex but it is the characters that call to you and their personal lives twist and turn more than the mystery. Each book solves a mystery but then leaves you with a cliffhanger in the character's lives so that you can't wait for the next book. You really should start with the first book so that you can follow Francesca's,Rick's and Calder's story from the beginning and at least now you won't have to wait between the books. Unfortunately, for those of us already done with the 7 books so far- I can't wait to see how things work in the next book. If you like romance novels I highly recommend this series.
