I thought this would be another book about the nutritional value or lack thereof in fast food. Instead, it is kind of a muckraking book about the beginnings and progress of the fast food industry, its impact on arenas of life including the meat-packing industry, cattle raising and ranchers, the minimum wage law, horrible employee working conditions and practices at McDonalds et al as well as in meatpacking plants, the manipulation of children and their eating habits from infancy (including drinking soda from a bottle, schools taking bribes to advertise fast food), the correlation between fast food development and obesity, and more. It was eye opening and made me make some decisions about not supporting industrial complexes who have had a negative impact on everyone. (I heard the author speak recently and he is bright and thorough--a journalist.)

This book was an odd dichotomy for me - there were aspects of it that I really didn't like, and yet it kept pulling me forward. The book was published in 1992 but is supposed to be taking place after the turn of the century. But there are so many technological advances that have happened between 1992 and now, that their absence was often a bit of a shock. The lack of cell phones and laptop computers spring immediately to mind. The main character was very well written, but a bit hard to like. WJW clearly did his research, as the town and its people felt very real to me. Still, things take a long while to really get going, and the ending left me hanging more than I'd like. I've enjoyed other books he's written more.

I've avoided reading this because of how much I disliked the last one. It's a bad sign when you want to throttle the main character and tell her get a reality check and a life. But this one was much more in line with the Mia of old, the one that first attracted me to the series and made me keep reading. Very funny and gives me some hope for the rest of the series.

This is another hospital romance. The writing seemed pretty good since this was the author's first book. The main reason I brought it was because it was written by a local author. The location of the story is in and about New Orleans. I just thought that the main hero was shown to be loose with his sex life before meeting her and did not seem to really show that he would necessarily stay faithful in the future. I guess I wanted him to suffer a little more - lol.
