I loved the subplot, told only in the pictures, wherein the father consults archaic psychological texts in order to understand his daughter's distress.

Book one in the Lord John series. Fans of Gabaldon's marvelous Outlander series will recognize Lord John, the honorable British officer whose unrequited love for Jamie caused some conflict with Claire. In this series (which has nothing to do with Outlander) we get to know more about Lord John. After seeing a blister on Joseph Trevelyan's "privy member," Lord John finds himself in an uncomfortable spot. Trevelyan is engaged to Grey's cousin, who has no idea her fiance is infected with a venereal disease. Lord John investigates this personal matter while also looking into the murder of Sergeant Timothy O'Connell, who may or may not be a spy. The mystery itself is not all that interesting, but, as always, Gabaldon's character development alone will keep readers coming back for more.

This review is posted at www.TalesWithTea.com **HERE!** Wither is a beautifully written novel that has an equally beautiful cover. Just look at it!! DeStefano has a magical way with words. Her writing is so effortless, flawless, and easy to read that you get lost inside of her world - the world of Wither. Wither takes place in a world where both men and women live only until their early twenties (25 for men and 20 for women). Because of this the characters are forced to live a hurried life. Under these circumstances, I understood why this world condoned polygamy and young mothers. The youngest mother, being only 13 or 14, was a bit disturbing. But like I said, when you only live to be 20, it's more understandable. The protagonist, Rhine, is definitely a realistic character in demeanor. She is in no way over-the-top or hard to follow. I loved her for this. Even though I had some trouble understanding her reasoning and choices, I still felt she was down to earth and ultimately a believable character. I loved the diversity between Rhine and her sister wives, and the different relationships they each developed with Linden. Also, I've got to admit, I felt super bad for Linden! Poor fellow! I wish I could have felt better about his story, but I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles. And Gabriel? Guuuurl, we did not get to see enough of him! All I can say is the second book best be having lots more of him! Hehe ;) I was definitely left with lots of questions after finishing Wither. Where is the government? How are they coping with these circumstances? Is there a lack of government or an uprising? Sadly, we didn't get to see very much of the 'outside world,' as we spend most of the novel within the mansion walls. I can understand that under Rhine's circumstances, world exploration wasn't really possible during Wither. Perhaps the second book will dive into life beyond the walls. Overall, Wither was a deliciously wonderful read! My Rating: 4 / 5 - Ashlee

Possibly the most underrated cyberpunk novel of all time.

I finished reading Watchmen during a pretty sad time in my life, and the final message of the book didn't do much to enhance my mood. But I can't help but appreciate the feeling of experiencing a work of such bleakness while going through my own depressing circumstances. During happier times, reading a somber novel feels like a lark, an escape almost from a world of aimless contentment, and at the same time it's a reassurance that things are going great, a convenient contextualizer to one's current upbeat state of mind. It's at times like these that the knowledge to be gained from such depressing books tend to be most easily forgotten, because at the time of reading they don't (seem to) say much to that relates to the real life circumstances of the reader. Which is why I'm glad that I read Watchmen when I did. The only sore spot for me in the novel was the characterization of Nite Owl. In a book filled with so many well-written characters, from the principal characters to some of the tiniest bit players, Nite Owl stood out as decidedly bland. I understand that he was supposed to be the one boringly “normal” person out of a cast of freaks and weirdos, but he seemed to just be missing a lot of the depth that made so many of the others seem legitimately human. It feels like he's the one “character” in a book full of “people”. It's still an amazing read and, considering the time in which it was written as well as its setting near the end of the cold war, has a surprising amount of relevance today in the character of Adrian Veidt, who inadvertently foreshadows some of the more annoying (is that the right word?) cultural attitudes of today.

** spoiler alert ** I actually enjoyed this more than The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, though it was not without it issues. The portrayal, early in the book, of Lisbeth as actually starting to form some manner of connection with people expands her character a bit (even this is somewhat swiftly undone once the main plot kicks in in earnest). The pain-insensitive giant was a bit much, especially as (as is pointed out in the book) congenital insensitivity to pain is actually a pretty serious complication. Again, nothing terribly earth shaking, but there's nothing wrong with a good psychological horror/crime novel, and this is that.
I am not ashamed in the least to say that I fall into the Twilight series "junkie" category. Yes, it is true that I am a sucker for any sort of romantic novel, and yes, vampires (albeit they are a hugely overused supernatural feature of modern writing) are cool, but those aren't the sole reasons why Stephanie Meyer's books are so alluring. Meyer has fantastic control over her writing. Her character development is phenomenal and thorough; I felt like each individual, from the protagonist Edward to smaller roles such as Jessica, had their own distinct personalities. The stories are told from the point of view of seventeen-year-old Bella Swan, an average girl who experiences some extremely NOT average events. I think Meyer did an awesome job "being" Bella, conveying the confusion and fear and excitement that the audience (which is primarily seventeen-year-old girls) can really relate to. Meyer's imagery is also something that I adored, so much so that a few book quotes made it to my Facebook status. Her metaphors are beautiful and poetic; in fact, the whole pace of the prose is eloquent. My favorite quote from New Moon is a metaphor that Edward uses to describe his loss of Bella. "Before you, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars-- points of light and reason. And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn't see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything."

While I haven't enjoyed Joanne Harris's recent books as much as her earlier ones this one shows some promise of getting back to the old style - though still not a patch on Chocolat and five quarters of the orange.

I liked this book, but found the relationship between these grown siblings to be unbelievably cheesy. Calling each other "doof" and "dip stick" just seemed unrealistic for a guy who ran from the law and spent two years in South America. Having said that, it was a good story with a good message, which is why I gave it 4 stars.

ROUGH REVIEW: As a young girl I read this book approximatley.. 15 times. It was my favorite book and still is if im honest. This book first made me realise just HOW much I loved to read. The characters were well established and their friendship reminded me of a relationship I could only dream about. I thoroughly enjoyed the way Jaclyn Mortiary structured the book. It was visually pleasinf and this only added to the magic for me.
