I love it when I read the last sentance of a book and as I am closing the pages can honestly say, "that was a GOOD book." I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy this book when I first started reading it, but by the middle of the story I was crying my eyes out. This book had a fantastic mix of suspense, danger, laughter, sentimentality, and love. It made me look at my own dog with new eyes.

a nice travel memoir that chronicles one laowai's (old foriegners)experience in fulin, sichuan in the mid-nineties. the tone is solid, and the stories interesting. unfortunately, due to china's quickly changing nature, it isn't a good idea to rely on all of his observations. but it gets the feeling down, and it's a good starting place if you're moving here.

From the very beginning, it was difficult to put this book down. The pacing was absolutely fantastic; there were two troughs in the action, but that change-up kept things interesting. At one point, the author apparently sought to out-do Tom Clancy in over-the-topness and, as a reader, I was unable to suspend disbelief, as it were (and this wasn't even part of the science fiction aspect of the book!). That said, the book rapidly re-engaged me. The darn thing made me late for work once or twice! I absolutely recommend this book to sci-fi fans.

Slow at times but always entertaining. A great behind-the-scenes oral history of cable television's greatest success that focuses more on the people and personalities than anything else. A tad long at 753 pages but worth the read if you've ever been an ESPN viewer or reader.

i wish i could give this book 4 stars, but i don't think that would really count since i only understood 60% of the book. but i liked what i understood! my first foray into the world of adult sci fi... we'll see if i return anytime soon. the first 40 pages were easily the most bizarre opening to a book i have ever encountered, but once i got into the story, i was kinda hooked. but then all the sci fi stuff started up again...
