This book was riveting to me. It is a true story, and is written by a woman who is not a writer, so don't expect it to be a literary marvel. But the details she reveals about life in Saudi Arabia was eye-opening to me. I am not very familiar with the culture in the Middle East, and this book really detailed why the culture is defined by the Islam religion, and why it makes people do what they do there. The author married a half-brother of Osama bin Ladin, and she describes a little about him and his personality. She was Swiss-born, and moved to Saudi Arabia after she married her husband, Yeslam. So as an outsider looking in, the culture there was foreign to her. Her struggle to live as a Westerner fell flat on it's face, and she had to submit to the customs of the country. There is a range of emotions present in this book, and the fact that it is a true story made it even more interesting.

Antsy has just found out that his classmate, Gunner is dying. So, being the good friend that he is, he (half jokingly) offers him a month of his life. Soon the news of Antsy's good deed spreads and everyone is donating time to Gunner. But as Antsy spends more time with Gunner, he realizes that there's more to Gunner and his illness than he first thought.

I like to read a few poems at a sitting. The blending of religions is fascinating; i.e. Jesus, Moses, Mohammed. I am not sure of how Rumi's Sufi roots fit into my world view though. It feels rather foreign and reads esoteric rather than poetic. The other great Sufi writer, Doris Lessing, makes more sense to my world view in regards to how she breaks the atom so to speak in The Golden Notebook. This book changed my life the first time around in graduate school at American because the main character disintegrates through her writing and completely remakes herself through her writing. The reader goes through this experience with her, thus Art. When Madonna remakes herself, she goes it alone then looks for a reaction from the audience, thus sensation not Art.

While provocative and well written, I had a difficult time finding redeeming value in this tory. There is no meaning to life says a 13 year old boy--and from that point onward his classmates decide to create a heap of meaning to prove him wrong. Only they don't, or do they? At times violent, horrific, and always a bit shocking, this book probes an existential theme to a very dark degree. I can't say as I'd recommend it to many teens or adults, as I did not find too much redemption at the end of the story. Definitely thought-provoking, however!

Original review posted on Layers of Thought. A young adult dystopian that sounds so realistic in the audio version that it’s frightening. Funny and heartbreaking, it will help readers think about what our world could become if capitalistic advertising is allowed to run wild in combination with technology. About: It appears that Titus is a regular teenager, the only difference is that in his world everyone has a “feed” implanted in their brain. It transmits constant personalized ads into their vision and auditory senses, including a way to keep in constant contact with anyone at anytime. It’s responsible for the fact that actual reading has become a thing of the past, since all communications are voice and thought activated via the “feed”. Sadly, also in this world the oceans are toxic, sterile, and no fish exist all in response to their rampant consumerism. It's all too normal for Titus and his friends. As they party, take trips to the moon, and ingest the occasional mind altering substance, they lead their “normal lives” with a “party on attitude”. However, this world view is about to change when Titus meets a girl named Violet who is very different from anyone he knows. He begins to realize that, along with all the teen fun and games, there is an underlying angst and horror which they are all trying desperately to ignore and marginalize. Thoughts: I enjoyed listening to this book in audio, with its well done and interesting sound effects. Told in first person by Titus, it’s coupled with their future version of “teen speak”. I dare you not to go around calling friends and family members “Unit” instead of “Dude” or other current young adult colloquialism. There was a romantic element to the story which is told from the guy’s perspective which I enjoyed. With a realistic ending that is not your “drive into the sunset” cliché. There are a good number of interesting science based elements in addition to the implant – including cloning and hover cars, however the best bit is how the actual feed sounds in this audio version that I think is particularly brilliant. I enjoyed this novel in audio and would recommend it for any teen (adult too) who enjoys a good dystopian. I could even imagine using the written version within the classroom as a modern day trade out for 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, or perhaps in tandem with required high school readings; giving a fresher perspective to the classics. I give this audio version a 4 stars, since in addition to the author’s creative technological ideas which are a key to the book, the reader and audio producer have also contributed to create a darkly funny and all to realistic “listen”.

The narrative style helps tell the story from the different perspectives of characters int he book, but the overall effect is unfocused and disconnected. The story itself picks up in places but it never really gains momentum. Definitely not his best book.

This book carefully documents the period of rapid white flight in Roxbury and Mattapan (Boston) during the late 1960s. It includes many stories of the people that we're caught up in this transformation. In addition, the authors provide a detailed political and philanthropic history of this period with specific focus on the impact of B-BURG (Boston Banks Urban Renewal Group), which restricted otherwise generous loan terms for minority families to targeted neighborhoods. Since its publication it has been highly criticized for putting to much emphasis on the effect of B-BURG in destabilizing the area. I tend to agree with this later viewpoint which is investigated in detail in Urban Exodus (which I have not read). Vale's book "Reclaiming Public Housing" has an excellent exposition and analysis of this debate.
