I was late hopping on the Stephanie Brown / Batgirl bandwagon, not being a huge fan of the Bat-universe, and I regret it (esp. now that she's booted from the DC New Universe). In this book (collecting issues 9-14), Miller hits his stride, showing Steph's growing confidence and competence, her teaming with Oracle, and her balancing of personal and private life. Both Lee Garbett and Pere Perez do a fine, clean job with the art. Good book, now missed.

The only downside to the end of the monolithic USSR was the end of the possibility of novels like this. The author uses the backdrop of the Soviet machinery to show, bit by bit, that decent people are decent and corrupt people are corrupt in much the same ways on both side of the iron curtain.

I am very impressed with this book. By current standards, we'd call it a "quiet" novel, because it's not a thriller and its suspense runs as an undercurrent rather than a constant throb. But it's a beautifully crafted and told account of one family's changes through one year, encompassing death, coming of age, and marital estrangement and failure. We should know more about this book and its author today.

Moore's writing reminds me of Bill Bryson. He had to go to donkey school before he can take a donkey on the pilgrimage trail across Spain to Santiago. The donkey is for that authentic feel. Quite a funny and interesting book/

This was a good romantic suspense. I was looking for something to pass the time and found the suggestion for this series through the romantic suspense group. The h is running from a horrific past (psychotic mother, traumatic event, etc.) and it catches up with her in the form of the one man she still loves. She must face the fact that you can change your name, your job, your looks, your friends, but you eventually have to deal with who you are and face your demons. I liked this twist. The hero was a little bit of a jerk and I wasn't sure I wanted him to get together; what hero tells the woman he just slept with that he wants to vomit or that she is a slut? What hero believes a woman he knows to be psychotic and verbally abuses the loving heroine? He was a little hard to cheer for but regardless, I wanted the heroine to succeed and I wanted the hero to find her and love her.
