There was slighly less historical detail or sense of place in this installment; Pulo Prabang never really came alive for me as a unique, distinct country. The exception to this was, of course, Stephen's trek to the temple deep in the jungle, and the time he spent with the orang-utans up there: definitely one of the most memorable and evocative moments in the series so far. Apart from that minor quibble, though, this was as superb as I've come to expect from O'Brian, full of humour and intelligence. The characters were as brilliantly drawn as ever; both throughout the book as a whole, and in those small scenes like Stephen helping van Buren to dissect the bodies of Ledward and Wray (that especially I found utterly chilling. oh Stephen). The minor characters were as neatly drawn as always: though I confess I found myself a little uncertain about Fox, who seemed very unbalanced. The ending was one of the most dramatic in the series, and not the fate I expected for the Diane so soon after her introduction. I have the feeling that despite my best intentions to make the series last, I will be dragging out The Nutmeg of Consolation as soon as I get home this evening to see how it resolves: especially given the fact that I desperately want to know whether or not Stephen is right as to the sex of the baby. *g*

I didn't like this and couldn't get into it. Initially I thought it was going to be good as the premise sounded interesting, but I wasn't really feeling much for the characters, and then came the sexual 'ritual' tri-bond thing, which I thought was stupid and although I am quite happy to read steamy or even graphic sex scenes, I like them to have a purpose and the characters to have a relationship around this...I also don't mind reading about the odd menage situation if the story calls for it and it is well-done, but I don't really like reading sex scenes where there is no real emotional connection, so this kind of spoilt it for me. It felt kind of forced and I didn't see the point of it, as it didn't add anything to the story that I could tell and it happened way too early for there to be any real connection there.

I love Mariam and Laila, I wish I could jump into the pages of this book and intercept beatings for them. This book has helped me to understand so many things, and yet has left me feeling so helpless and bothered by my own ignorance as to what is happening in the very same world that has been very kind to me. I want to understand the purpose of war so that perhaps I might feel that the price that people pay could be worth it on some level. My heart still aches for the characters in this story. Khaled Hosseini has given me a new perspective on historical events as well a reason to become more attentive, gracious, humble and repectful.
