Although I am Indian, this book taught me a fresh perspective on my own culture and the evolution of myth within it. Exceptional eye-opener.

What I Can Tell You: This is one of the most interesting books I have read on protecting my family from the every day products I use in my home and on our bodies. I was shocked at how many toxins we have in our house. Once you get educated, it is easy to see why these items are a danger to you and your family. We are all scent based and if something smells good, it is good for us. This is far from the truth. I remembered while reading this book that a friend of mine while taking clothes out of the dryer after as wash commented on how nice her clothes smelled. I wanted to call her and say, stop using products with scents. Our pores take in these toxins created by scientists in a lab. "The whiff of moutain spring comes from Scientists dressed in white lab coats and masks, sitting on stools mixing compounds until they reproduce natural smells through the use of chemicals." It was also an eye opener to read the section on pest control. The cartoon shows a guy wearing a protective suit armed with an oxygen tank and a spray can standing over two unprotected kids. The words under it are: "I think I saw a fly." In the summer, I spray the gazebo like crazy to keep the flying nats and mosquitoes out. It is time to read the labels or like for some pyretha (thanks Vexcon). There is so much to discuss here. Like did you know that OJ after a few weeks loses Vitamin C? Or that Milk is acid producing which means it cancels out calcium intake. I could go on and on. This is one of those books that you will want to highlight, dog ear and discuss with your friends and family for years to come.

This story continues the tale of Penelope Lumley and her three charges, the Incorrigibles. The children are still learning how to behave like children--instead of wolves--and the group faces more challenges when they take a trip to London with the Ashtons while the mansion is being repaired. Strange things keep happening to Miss Lumley and the children: the guidebook they have doesn't seem to be of the normal variety, they encounter a fortune-teller who gives them a cryptic warning, and they notice Mr. Ashton getting twitchy near the time of the full moon. Luckily, Miss Lumley finds a friend in Simon, a young man who helps them find their way when they first arrive in unfamiliar London. Throughout all of this, Miss Lumley can't stop thinking about her parents--where they are and who they are. I was excited to get this because I really enjoyed the first book (The Mysterious Howling) but I have to say that I was disappointed. This story felt like it lacked the humor/excitement/special something that the first book did. This book ended with many loose ends, so I expect there will be another book in the works.

One horrific event after another. We never got to know these characters at all, they were all two dimensional. All the black men were monsters, all the white men weak and nasty, the white women selfish and the refugees pure innocence. These are not real people I cared about, just caricatures. I read the whole book sortof wincing to see what would come next. This should have been an article in the New Yorker. I get it, he did a lot of research and cares about this problem. I do too! But this book wasn't a novel. He seems to have considerable writing talent (with the very notable exception of how children speak.) It reads fast but sortof like eating an oyster - just open up and let it slide down. Well meaning but not a novel that worked for me.

I first picked up Buechner after asking a fellow English major friend of mine in college whom he'd recommend I read. I wish I could repay the favor he did with that suggestion, as Buechner is just one of my favorite writers. Somewhat in the tradition of C.S. Lewis, he's a literary Christian who does fiction, memoir, and various musings on faith equally well.

After introducing Aaron to Tombstone last weekend, it was time for a re-read of Territory. I adored it just as much on second reading. Old West shenanigans, with magic? This book was basically written for me!

Not much to say about this book. The sequel to Long Halloween is a decent story, but it's too simaler to it's predecessor. Pretty much same plot, just moved around different villains and characters. Still a good story though.
