I don't remember much of the plot, but I do rememeber being captivated by these books as a teen.

I have loved every Andrea Barrett book I've read, most especially The Voyage of the Narwhal. Somehow I was a little disppointed with this one. Maybe it was because the first copy I received had a 16-page section missing in the middle! Kudos to the Book Depository for getting a replacement to me within a week, but I was reading something else by then and had lost the thread; I had to skim-read to get back into it.[return][return]So long story short, as usual Barret beautifully incorporates science into a story of real people living difficult lives. It's a subtle meditation on group dynamics anc casual xenophobia.

This story about J. Sutter, a professional junketeer, starts out very promising. I laughed at the truthfully satirical portrayal of greedy freelance journalists. As the story of John Henry progresses, though, the book loses its focus and becomes a little too abstract.

I really liked the beginning section of the book where I learned some history of how the founding fathers came to write the Constitution and some of their goals with regards to it. I didn't like quite as much the section where it talked about each of the 28 principles behind the Constitution. Some of the principles I just skimmed over because they were principles that I already knew and agreed with. I thought it was a bit distracting to have a subheading for every one or two paragraphs in the book. Overall I did learn some things and feel very concerned about some changes that have been made in our generation on how things are run in the government and I'm also concerned about where our country is headed. I think that this is a good read for anyone who wants to learn more about our Constitution and some of the principles that the founding fathers were striving for. Our country was truly founded by inspired people.

Gioia Timpanelli’s fiction is unique in my experience. She is an author who has taken a modern oral storytelling method--heavily influenced by Jung and Joseph Campbell--that is also practiced by Robert Bly and Michael Meade, and she has parlayed her talent for that method into fiction writing--and with some success. What Makes a Child Lucky is a very interesting tale garnished with many ponderable tidbits of wisdom, many of them well worth reading more than once. And most of the vital elements of good fiction are here as well: solid characters, a strong and consistent voice, and a compelling plot. However, this book does have a limited audience; much of the story’s effect will be lost on those unfamiliar with the Jung/Campbell school of “wisdom tales.”

Very interesting book. It's amazing what one person can do. I agree with him in that education is key to eliminating radicalism in the region - especially in the long term. I disagree with him in that I think military action has to play a role in the short term. Some radicals are too far gone for education to help and only a 500 lb JDAM can reform them.

Excellent story, told in a clever way. Only loosely fits the definition of a "novel." More like a collection of short stories woven together through shared characters (i.e., a minor character in one chapter becomes the central character in another chapter, at a different point in his/her life). The majority of the 13 chapters were actually published independently as short stories (The New Yorker, Harpers, etc.). Only one of the 13 chapters/stories missed for me, and unfortunately it was the final one. Egan should avoid writing sci-fi in the future, as it's not her strong suit. She's excellent at writing about the lives of young people living in SF or NYC in the 1970s-1990s. Futuristic stuff, not so much. She really should have ended the book after the incredibly moving PowerPoint chapter (I know, right?!).
