So what if it was a little bit embellished - all memoirs are. Most people just don't get caught. I loved the book and don't care if he took liberties or not. It was an amazing, moving book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

this is terrific..odd..but terrific..the main character,Izzy, reminds me of Harriet the Spy all grown up and taking a turn down the naughty road for a bit.. The spellmans own and operate a PI service...they all are a bit nutty..and the family is...well dysfunctional...but fun..Izzy is tired of her parents butting into her life..so attempts to retire from the PI buisness...they will not accept this...however, say if Izzy takes this one case and solve it she is free to do as she chooses...there is other zany stuff going on too...Fun, fun, fun...this is a must read....

Probably my favorite of his comedies. The production I saw at the Globe (summer '08) is the best live Shakespeare I have seen (so far). Never had a chance to teach it though...although working with Leah D. on a version for her Independent Project with 3rd graders was a lot of fun.

I've read a lot of reviews of this book that express disappointment over the focus on the relationship between father and son rather than on the apoclayptic event itself. For me, and maybe this is because I am a parent who has gone on a 1000+ km pilgrimage with my son when he was 9, the focus on the day to day survival of this father and son duo makes the book all the more powerful. The short yet biting conversations between the two constantly illustrate the hard won maturity of the boy and the love of the father for his son. They are both the whole world for eachother, which makes the bleak, frightening landscape less depressing. I am a big fan of scavenging stories in post-apocalyptic fiction, so the daily details of what they were able to eek out of the dismal leftovers of a post-nuclear (I assume as only a few lines even attempt to explain the underlying cause of the ash, dessicated humans, and winter of blackness) world. I love to imagine what will really matter when the shit goes down, what will have value or true meaning, and this book does a great job of that. Coincidentally, there was a huge electrical explosion and a tree went up in flames next door to my house while I was reading this book. The power was out for hours, leaving me feeling a bit apocalyptic myself.
