A comic book without drawings. Appears to have been written in one day (March 8, 1996), takes about 90 minutes to read (maybe 2 hours allowing for some reflection along the way), and delivers laughs. What's not to like? Well, the whole enterprise: the author sat down one day and let his thoughts amble along in writing until evening, when he declared it a book and was done. This fits with the automatic drawing etc. of surrealism and has the same intellectual and emotional weight. And is just as passé. As the author confesses (page 58): "But my mania--to be constantly adding things, episodes, characters, paragraphs, to be constantly veering off course, branching out--is fatal. It must be due to insecurity, fear that the basics are not enough, so I have to keep adding more and more adornment until I achieve a kind of surrealist rococo, which exasperates me more than it does anybody else." Well said--except for maybe the "exasperates me more than it does anybody else" part. Surrealistic rococo isn't bad. But it's just rococo.

Fantastic! It's been a couple of years since I finished it - about time to read it again (something I do with very few books).

** spoiler alert ** This is the best in the series so far! I've decided to read all of the chronicles of Narnia, starting with THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE and THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER is by far my favorite so far. I with it was longer (only 248 pages) because there were so many neat little adventure that I feel like Lewis could have added more. I have mixed feelings about the end, when they are quite near Aslan's land. The imagery is just beautiful, but it becomes about Christianity again (if you are an adult reading the book) which cheapens the mood a little for me. Anyways, this one is definately worth reading!!!

Gather up some friends and some copies of this book to read together. In a small town outside of Chicago, Avalon Park, we meet an assortment of women whose lives have intersected. Each one,as life will have it, going through their own grief, loss, crisis, or personal growth lesson. Ms. Gee has brillantly made each character identifable and relatable through their inner dialogue to interactions. The community, though small, each person is disconnected from one another until a bag of frienship bread shows up making the receiver mix the starter and share the portions with three others (so forth, so forth). The bonding over something as simple as sharing starter, or a recipe change highlights what occurs when the characters reach out beyond themselves. Friendship Bread highlights just that - simple friendship. I have my starter that I just can't wait to share, along with this book. *Recipes are found in the back for those that feel like savoring Avalon Park a little longer.

I enjoyed this book. It kept my attention, although I couldn't relate to the topic of divorce (I'm only 24), I did enjoy the story and the characters.
