this book is made up of two distinct halves, and the second half was a big let-down.

A really clever story for the Disney fan in all of us. When mysterious things start to happen in Disney's Magic Kingdom, it's up to five kids to solve whose behind it...and the answer might surprise you! I liked this book. It's a really fun read, and if you love The Magic Kingdom as much as myself and my friends do, I think you'll find it hard to put down. :)

This book is a powerful novel that weaves the stories of three women during the early 1900s in New York City. The women all live in NYC and are greatly impacted by the strikes that take place and the tragedy at Triangle. The variety of perspectives makes this a must-read for any budding history enthusiasts.

2.5 Stars. I'm confused. Is it chick lit? I expected so much more. At the same time, it was nice to read something that I actually looked forward to picking up on my daily commute. Easy breezy. Yet, was it meant to be so fluffy? I didn't like it nearly as much as I wanted to. And I'm having a hard time explaining why. In this book the characters are either goodies or baddies. This makes it pretty simple reading. Juvenile even. I also had trouble accepting some basic premises of the book. Practically in every chapter Skeeter worries how writing about the help might jeapordise their safety in the turbulent social climate. Yet she keeps at it without second thought. I also wanted to read the stories she was documenting! Wasn't that the whole point of the book? The black voice? But rather than reading about the domestic help's life and work, we read about writing about it. And why make Skeeter such a central character, I feel a bit cheated. We are not given a reason why we should think a certain way about someone, we just have to take the author's word for it. Skeeter says of the “least interesting lover in the world; Stuart”: “He may be many things, Stuart, but he is not a liar”. How do we know that? Only because of that very sentence. This annoyed me: “I expected the stories to be sweet, glossy”, says Skeeter. After we have been convinced for 150 pages how hard the help's life has been, why on earth would Skeeter think that? I'm quite mystified. I was so sure I'd love the book that I nearly refuse to believe I didn't.

I love this book. I remembered really enjoying it the first time around, and it held true this time as well. Movie star turned director Zach Benedict is wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife, then escapes after five years in prison. Julie Mathison is a small town schoolteacher in the wrong/right place at the wrong/right time. She become his kidnapping victim, and over a few days trapped in a beautiful home in the Colorado mountains, she tries to escape, he confesses more about himself than he has to anyone else, and they fall in love. What was surprising about this second read is how long the book felt. In retrospect, I wouldn't trade it for anything, because I recognize why it feels long. I've read enough romance novels to know that at the point where Zach realizes Julie didn't betray him, and comes to her to ask her to marry him, that in another book, that would have been the cue for "The End - and they lived happily ever after..." Instead, the last hundred pages or so tells the delightful story of their second love story, during their engagement period in her small town. It's lighthearted and fun, and I can't begrudge it feeling a bit long enough to say that I wouldn't have wanted to hear that story.

2. Endorsements-nya juga terlalu banyak

I heart SLP! Seriously, what a great read. Each chapter is told from the point of view of one of the characters, so it reads almost like extended prose monologues that flow in beauty and simplicity the way that Parks's writing usually does. Yet the subject - how much are we fated to act out our lives (and isn't this the stuff of all great literature) is played out uniquely, through the discussion of Beede blood and Beede luck contrasted through the admissions of guilts - most tiny, some large - we as readers are privy to in the interior moments of the mind each chapter includes. It seems that many of us want to believe in the larger narrative of fate, and yet if we were to really look at our thoughts and actions, we might have to acknowledge that fate is of our own construction.

Another great installment in the Escape from Furnace series. This world just keeps getting more and more complex. I love the lingering question of why this is all happening. We continue to get the thrill of weezers, mutant dogs, surgically enhanced kids, and a demented warden with the added bonus of mutant rats, mutant kids and vast crematoriums. I love the intrigue and the surprising depth of Alex’s character. Especially his conversations with Donovan and the moral dilemmas he faces. I have the same two criticisms I had last time: no mention of ANY females and knowing that Death Sentence was the next book in the series put a damper on the excitement of the escape attempt. Hopefully book 3 will solve all this for me.

Adventures of the vampire Saint Germain in 10th century Germany, where he comes to the aid of people trying to defend their fortress against disease and marauders. It's hard to like the characters in this book, because the culture is superstitious, misogynistic, and brutal. (They execute one woman because her child was stillborn, and another because she was kidnapped and raped.) Every order given is reinforced with a threat; every request followed by a bribe. Life and death decisions are made on the basis of omens and the ravings of a half-mad priest who is trying to stamp out worship of the "old gods" in favor of the "White Christ". Saint Germain is always the most civilized, open-minded, kindhearted character in these books. I like him, but he's practically a boy scout; really quite unrealistically honest and generous, and a feminist to boot. He's sad and lonely without being given to brooding. He consistently falls in love with strong, intelligent women who are placed in impossible situations. Sometimes he's able to save them, and sometimes he isn't. This book explains the origin of the eclipse pectoral he wears prominently in at least one other book.

Interesting...while many of the traits the test to be "like me" I tend to agree with Ken Robinson's assertions that intelligences cannot be easily categorized.
