i loved the idea of this, and generally found it well-executed, but it never seemed to be quite as free of racism as it wants to be... and while the subject matter is genuinely dramatic, sometimes the execution seemed a little melodramatic. it almost needed another 50-100 pages throughout to make room for all that happened in the book to have space to fully happen.

In order to get back at the school bully, Nolan creates an anonymous website under the pseusonym "Shredderman" where he posts pictures and videos of the bully's heinous acts. Maybe it was the narrator of this audiobook or maybe there are illustrations in the book that make it more interesting, but I just wasn't all that wowed by Shredderman. I can definitely see how it could appeal to kids, though. The hero is a tech-savvy bully fighter who posts jokes and a big picture of the bully's bottom on his website. I think reluctant readers would enjoy this one.

angry treatise against the optimism of america. yes, she has a point that the popular mantra of optimism may have lead us into major trouble (eg the economic crisis) but there was probably a way to do it but it could have been argued more gracefully.

it was a pretty good book filled with juicy romance and a pretty good action section. i recomend the read if you want to just sit back with a glass of lemonade in the sun.

This is a well-written funny book sure to appeal to reluctant readers... BUT I will likely not buy it, as it promotes delinquent behavior with only the most cursory of consequences... The twist halfway through while superficially clever took away one of the only outs, and while if it had been a commentary on intrusive laws like Florida's baggy pants law it might have worked, the overthetop nature and the safety issues ignored to me made the book unredeemable at least in the ARC I have... Plus in the end I think everyone is in denial about the mental illness of the main character... Read "in Defense of Thaddeus Linkletter" for a similar book with a much more redeemable main character, or Janet Tashjian's "multiple choice" for an interesting book about a self-destructive game played by the teenager... Reread after seeing the movie... I can see what they were going for, however this was one of the rare instances where the movie captured it better than the book... Curious where it goes from here but still don't like the first book very much

I'm now a fan of Khaled Hosseini. This book is the kind that will stay with you forever. The author really knows how to build his characters, I feel like I really know them well. I was putting this book off for the longest time, though I know it got good reviews, because I thought I didn't want to read about war in a different country. But I'm so glad I picked this book up and started reading. It will get you hooked in no time. And the characters, oh the characters, I feel "emotionally invested" on them.
