The creepiest part of this book is not the zombies but the human characters and the way they treat one another. They are sleazy and left me with a dirty taste in my mouth. Kirkman is an awesome writer and this book is no exception .... It's just totally not my thing. If you like zombies though it probably would totally be your thing. Pencils 6/10 Writing 7/10

one of those books where I feel like it's good to have read it, but wouldn't read it again

This is a fascinating book and I highly recommend it. The author also has written "Blink" and "The Tipping Point" that I wish to read. I guess you would characterize these books as "pop sociology" which I ordinarily don't care much for. But "Outliers" spells out some fascinating ideas and some seem to hold true in my experience.

This book was so much more than I ever expected. I went into it thinking it couldn't live up to the hype and, but I was wrong. Heartwarming, engaging, fun, and witty. As they say, I lauighed, I cried... I was completely enchanted. This book was not just about a dog, it was a memoir of John's life throughout the years that his faithful dog was alive. His career, his marriage, his children, his losses. I am just about at the point in my life where this book started for him, and it seems like a paralel of what I want my life to eventually look like (for the most part), so I felt much closer to it all.

If you are reading this book and haven't yet read Ali's Brick Lane, put this book down and get it! Brick Lane is so superior, that it almost makes In the Kitchen seem like a bad book. Not that it is a bad book, and it does have similar themes, but it is written from a different, and, in my opinion, less convincing, point of view. Both deal with immigration and identity, one from the immigrants point of view, the other from the British point of view. Brick Lane deals with the internal struggles of immigrants to maintain identity and community as 'outsiders' in Britain. (It is particularly good at showing the impact of gender among immigrants of particular cultures.) In the Kitchen deals with an employer's growing unease with the injustices (many illegal and some violent) suffered by his immigrant employees and others he comes in contact with in the service industry. He struggles with his own identity, a history of depression in his family, and what it means to be "British." The themes in In the Kitchen were not particularly obvious in the beginning and it took about half way through to develop an interest in the people and plot, but the further I got the harder time I had putting it down. It is good, and worth a read of you are interested in the subjects. But, it has been done better, particularly by this author.

This year, for the first time in my life, I've started paying attention to the books that win awards, so when I saw this book - Themes for English B: A Professor's Education in and Out of Class - saw that it won the AWP Award for Creative Nonfiction in 2005 and saw that it was written by a guy who teaches at Salem State, a public school probably much like the one I teach in, I thought I should give it a try. I'm glad I did. The writing is lovely but not flowery or overblown. The stories are real and tragic and glorious and painful - all the things I see in the stories my own students have to tell. The message - if such a book has a message - is true - be real yourself, realize what your students have to give you, and keep working and learning. It's a book I needed to read at this time in the semester. Scrimgeour tells tales about the teachers who inspired him, about how he hopes to inspire, and about the times he doesn't. He talks about the things he says that hope lodge in his students brains and those moments when he just wants to cancel class because he know that no one, himself included, wants to be there on a Friday afternoon. I recognize all these moments, and if nothing else, this book comforts me and reminds me that I'm not alone. But it's more than that - it's a model itself - of a great a teacher, a good writer, and a human who tries to make the best of all things. While the last section of the book strays away from teaching a bit - into subjects like basketball and a collaborative dance/poetry project - the honesty and straight-forwardness of the writing carry the reader through. For anyone who has taught or done anything that brings equal parts glory and frustration, this book is a great read.

I really loved this book, it is actually the first part of a trilogy. After the third one, I cried. I find that lots of different kinds of people have liked this book. I think to this day, it is still my favorite. I've read it proobably about 10 times. It is a young adult book, but there are some very awesome ideas about the after life and religion and such. Its very touching and if they ever make it into a movie I claim the partr of 'Shari'.

This book is has a random smattering of stories of women who go abroad to live for different reasons. My favorite is the story of a woman who moves to Egypt to support her Egyptian husband as he copes with the loss of his father. The stories are well-edited and short enough that it can be consumed in small, thoughtful bites.
