very strong start to the spotlight series! i think i'm gonna like it. the focus on fleshing out individual characters will work really well if the rest are as good as this :) 4 different artists worked on this issue and all were pretty good!

book 3 of the young adult sci-fi 'chaos walking' trilogy has a fantastic transparent overlayed jacket/cover design (similar to the first two books i guess, but this is the best of them i think). and once again the typography throughout the book is intelligently handled and plays an even larger role in comprehending the story than it did previously. it's a very powerful and intense book dealing with the ambiguities, complexities & horrors of war—all in the context of well-developed characters. my disappointment with it (the same as i had with book 2) is that i think it loses itself somewhat in its depth and intensity and again doesn't build on the wonder and discovery shown in the first book. nevertheless i think patrick ness deserves all the awards he's received for this series. it's an important work that skilfully addresses some very timely themes for the world we live in.

I learned many fascinating things about Mr. T and Chuck Norris, but my favorite was "When Mr. T was circumcised his foreskin was not disposed of. Instead it was raised as a normal child, and it grew to love the game of basketball. Today we know Mr. T's foreskin as Shaquille O'Neal." If you enjoy the depth of creativity it takes to think of a statement like that and how over the top Chuck Norris and Mr. T already are, then this is the book for you. Plus the illustrations are boss.

I have changed my review slightly for this.. from 5/5 to 4/5 MAYBE even a 3.5/5.. I kinda wish I hadn't read it again... I read it originally when I was very young and loved it so much.. this time around...I liked it.. but didnt love it. I dont remember Bastian being such a douche bag... I know there is a lesson in it but I liked the magic I first felt reading this as a child. Its definitely a book I highly recommend but please read it sooner rather than later... :)
