Have to agree with PJH on this one. I love Sedaris but this book wasn't his best. I gave it a 3 though for the fact that I had quite a few laugh-out-loud moments in the first part of the book. This was Sedaris in his element - waxing on about various odd experiences from his very own, completely unique, perspective. The last 1/3 of the book however, was dedicated to only one topic - Sedaris' quest to quit smoking after 20-odd years, a quest that entailed a temporary move to Tokyo, Japanese lessons and a lot of thinking. And it all sounds interesting enough except that once he started on the tale, I found very quickly that I really didn't care. Too bad. Now that he's a non-smoker, I'm sure Mr. Sedaris will find many a new habit to fill his former smoking time. I hope he'll write it about them all.

This book BLEW ME AWAY! When I first started reading it, I put it down in disgust. It was way too dark, gory, violent, and depressing. I am so glad I gave it another chance and read further. This book is a stark portrait of human nature, from the most depraved cruelty imaginable to the impossible depths of familial love and friendship. Horrific, yet uplifting. Emotionally raw. Painfully and beautifully honest. I would recommend it to anyone with a strong stomach.

I read this in a day while in bed sick, unable to do anything else much. Unless you are in similar circumstances, I recommend doing something else rather than reading this book. Anything else, really. Oh sure, it has some plot twists and all that kind of stuff, but the writing is so unbearable clunky (the translator's fault, perhaps) and the characters so all exactly the same as one another (muddle up some pieces of dialogue and I guarantee you'll have no idea which character was speaking) that your time really would be better spent elsewhere. Try some Wilkie Collins, perhaps. PS. what is it with male writers who are obsessed with 'the alternative smarth-mouth punk girl who is really skinny and hates cuddling but loves no-strings-attached sex'? so, so beautifully written. I actually read it twice in a row because it's so pretty. that's saying a lot when the narrator spewing said beautiful prose has an unhealthy obsession with prepubescent girls.
