I really don't know what to think about this book. It is unique, it is interesting... but it is missing something I really don't know how to describe. With a hefty 500+ page count, it has plenty of room to tell an good story, but it doesn't ever really seem to get around to it. I realized about a third of the way through that nothing much had happened and I didn't really know many of the characters very well at all. I appreciate the way Selznick plays with genres and formats--and the illustrations are lovely--but I read a book mainly for the story. And, unfortunately, the story here just isn't very engaging. I wish it were... I really want to like this book more than I do.

I enjoyed this very, very much. They say that smell is the sense most directly related to memory and I have no doubt that this is true. Since smell and taste are so closely related, a book full of memoires attached to food makes all the sense in the world to me. It made me stop and wonder how many of my favorite foods are my favorites simply because of the memories they evoke. A lot of the foods I wasn't familiar with as they are British so there has been a bit of poking around on the internet to see just what the author was talking about. Even for those I haven't looked up yet, though, nothing is lost. I found it didn't matter if I wasn't familiar with the dish -- the memoiries stand on their own just fine. Definitely an enjoyable read.

This was excellent, funny and smart, but I felt like the ending was a bit choppy and forced. I'd love to see what Yang would do with a proper adaptation of the Monkey King story-- this was one of the three narratives interwoven though the book-- but I think that's probably my love of the Monkey King more than anything else. Very good, at any rate.

I listened to this on audio, and it was excellent! The reader did a great job, and the story was very good. Sort of a cross of Harry Potter and Roald Dahl's "The Witches".

Years ago I read an essay in Esquire magazine by Nabakov encouraging readers to read and reread the same books over and over. (I guess I am too much a book consumer to have the patience to reread books.) I have tried to find the essay online with no success. Anyway, he listed about ten books which he had read many times, In Search of Lost Time was one of them. I had read about a new translation of it and delved into the first volume. If there is one over riding theme in Swann's Way, it is longing. The first section, the narrator writes of his childhood and how he longed for his mother to kiss him before going to bed. The second section describes Swann's longing for Odette, his lover. I swam in his story telling, in Swann's life. It was wonderful. The third section, tells of the narrator's longing as a youngster for Gilberte, Swann's daughter. I understand why Nabakov loved to reread this book.
