I read this book a while ago, so I don't remember the details all that clearly. But what I do remember is that it was very real and moving for me. The book literally took me to the time that he was trying to describe and painted a very heart breaking picture for me. It was even somewhat educational if you are like me, and don't have a clue about foreign happenings.

** spoiler alert ** Wonderful story, and the most creative, original fantasy world I've encountered in quite some time. With all the buildup about the Red Sea Raiders throughout the book, I was predicting some sort of clash with them at the end of the story. The eruption of intrigue, betrayal, and assassination that took place took me by delightful surprise. It scared me. The raw, very real danger that Fitz and Burrich were in was much more thrilling than a simple fight against a known enemy. I think the subplot I enjoyed the most was Fitz's friendship with Molly. I liked how Fitz would work hard to excel in every task and duty given to him (Well, most of the time), but he didn't become overly prideful in himself because of it. He was not boastful. Molly was his escape from that world, and he never bragged or showed off to her. He kept humble, despite who he was and what he could do. No matter what he mouthed off about to Burrich, or argued about with Chade, I think that revealed his character more than anything else. I'll be looking forward to see if Molly shows up in the next books, but it seems like she has made her exit at the end. I have to hand it to her, Hobb is a master of subtle heartbreak. I can't believe she managed to kill Nosy twice to the reader.

I WANTED to love this book. In theory, I like Alice Hoffman. In reality, my "like" for her peaked at Practical magic, I think. This book follows a small town and it's main founders' family throughout the years - more like short stories.

I was hoping to get so much more out of this book than I did... (quite disappointing)

An eerie look inside the psyche of a girl struggling with an eating disorder, self-esteem, the death of her former best friend, and her perceived family expectations. The scary thing was that while I was reading I felt drawn to her self-challenge to cut down and down on her caloric intake. I lack her discipline, so no worries. I think Anderson did a great job conveying the issues and motivations behind Lia's seemingly irrational behavior.

Excellent...mainly because I idealize those 'good ole days' where life was (in theory) simple and prosperity was usually measured by the sweat of the brow.
Too creepy

Probably because it is one of the Christie novels made into a film (with an amazing cast including Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith) this is one of her most popular. I don't think it's one of her very best though. I'd name And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd over Death on the Nile, and my personal favorite is Death Comes as the End for the romance and setting in Ancient Egypt. Mind you, the famous Christie way with a twist is there in Death on the Nile--with the usual clever red herring, brilliant solution by Poirot, and a shocking ending with real impact. There are colorfully drawn characters and, as with all Christie's books, it's a fun read, even if slower-paced than most at the start since events build up to the murder, rather than beginning with a murder, and there's less local color than you might expect from its setting in a cruise on the Nile. I think part of the problem for me is the setup is too similar to Murder on the Orient Express--with a bunch of suspects traveling together but without the logical reason for them being all together that Murder on the Orient Express manages. The murders--how they were done--also seem more far-fetched. Nevertheless this is ranked four stars because it's handicapped by comparing it to Christie's best. If I were comparing it to the usual book on the mystery shelves in stores, it would win top marks.

The Scarlet Letter is an interesting book and certainly worth reading, if nothing else for some historical perspective. You can learn a lot about American expectations of symbolism, character, narrative, etc., and how they might have developed. For me, though, it's most interesting as a stepping stone and not necessarily as an individual work. My expectations of a "good" work of literature don't really let me enjoy the text. Some of the characters are fantastic, but I find it very distracting to have the symbolism made into a bludgeon which is used to (painfully and repeatedly) hit me over the head.

Mostly just skimmed it, though I did read the first two parts and most of the fourth. Didn't get real interested in it. I was really into Watts a couple years ago but it seems I got my fill then and just don't get into his books anymore.
