Surprising, given that I'm not at all a fan of horror genres, but this book was just really, really interesting (and not your typical zombie book). It approaches the zombie apocalypse in historical record, imaginatively "analyzing" and recording early failed and eventually successful military responses, survival strategies, the long-term impacts on economy, ecology, government, etc., as well as philosophical and psychological issues, of a massive zombie pandemic/war. A sociological and epidemiological approach to zombie plague. I wish there had been more female voices in the story (there are 5 women's accounts vs. 37 men's accounts), given that the premise was that this was an oral history of the zombie war, adding in all the human factor and personal perspectives that were cut from a fictional "official government report" -- it makes it look like a poorly executed oral history. All in all, a fascinating and haunting read.

Like nothing else. A swooning, turgid, overwrought historical romance novel in the Rebecca Brandywine vein, but featuring effete, etherial Robert Whyte and Donough, brooding master of Gaywyck. The author's incredibly proud of himself and his accomplishment, and his desire to show off his art history degree is readily apparent, but this is still an amazing, one of a kind read. If you like cheezy gay romance novels which, it seems, I do.

I've been reading this since maybe March? That is to say it took me at least 3 months. Definitely interesting subject, just a little too dry for me--even as a chemist! The last chapter was perhaps my favorite, because my colleague and I had recently been discussing the periodic table (yes we do that) and she was trying to remember a group 13 element with "l"s in it that is poisonous. I was like...um...they're mostly poisonous! Turns out, your favorite and mine, thallium! I did think the chapter headings (chemical formulas) were cute, though I took issue with largely repetitive sections (methanol, than ethanol).

I've definitely got a weakness for books / movies that deal with memory. Forgotten tells the story of 16-yr-old London, whose only memories are not of her past but of her future. Huh? Sounds weird, doesn't it? Well it is weird, and while London's unusual plight is by no means fully explained, I was never left with the impression that it involved something supernatural or paranormal. If anything, this book is very much grounded in realism, save for this one unusual detail of London's malfunctioning memory. I read this book in one huge gulp, just tearing through the pages. The premise is so original that I was hooked from the beginning and instantly came down with a case of "the gottas" -- as in, I just gotta know what happens next!! I remember (no pun intended) experiencing a similar case of the gottas when I read Lisa McMann's Wake, another compulsive page-turner featuring a young girl with an unusual affliction. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend that you do! In it, McMann introduces readers to Cabel (who I crowned the boyfriend we all wish we had in high school). And he still is IMO, but whoa mama, has he got some serious competition in Luke. I mean, is this guy for real or what? At times, he was almost too saccharine-sweet perfect and I didn’t know whether to puke or to run screaming to the dentist. I did neither, because in the end he completely won me over. Grown men who wish to woo their long-term partners would seriously benefit from taking a few pages from “the book of Luke” – this guy has got it figured out gentlemen. Trust me. So yeah, while there is mystery in this story, and while there is high school drama, this is mostly a teen romance. I don’t want to lie to you about that, in case you might have been getting other ideas. But it’s a romance that is tested by a pretty unusual problem – that being the girl has no past memories but a whole life of future memories. This makes her present very interesting. Forget girl meets boy, try girl meets boy over and over again because she can never remember him. Okay, I know it’s a stretch, but I promise if you suspend disbelief for just a moment, the story really will sweep you up and away. This part of the book reminded me a lot of the movie 50 First Dates. How would you live if you weren’t able to remember what happened yesterday, but you know what will happen next week? A year from now? Ten years from now? Do you accept your fate? Do you try to change it? Most importantly, do you keep your mouth shut about the fate of others? Imagine knowing when someone was going to die, even how they were going to die? That is one burden I could live without. I am a firm believer in ignorance is bliss. I think. And ultimately, that’s what I loved about this book the most, it made me think. Are our futures written in stone? Is it destiny or free-will?

I picked this book up from a street vendor in Mumbai two months into my trip around India. I had been reading post-colonial Indian epics back to back since I arrived in the sub-continent and after finishing the gut-wrenching A Fine Balance I finally reached a point where my emotional wellbeing couldn't take another tale of poverty and woe whilst bearing witness to it in the real world as well. So I eagerly dove into what I thought would be an unusual contemporary American tale... Fifty pages in I got to the part about the invasion of Smyrna and the atrocities committed therein and I promptly gave up and instead sourced a copy of Lucky Jim for comedic relief. But the exigiencies of travel (read: recuperation from a motorcycle accident) forced me to resume Middlesex and as it turned out, I was extremely glad I did so. I enjoyed Eugenides's modern take on the Greek mythological tradition, and the family generational saga structure. At first I'll admit I was somewhat befuddled by the Cal/Calliope, 'born twice' dichotomy, but I just went with it, confident that Eugenides would eventually set me to rights. And that he did. I came to appreciate the fluid narrative voice which slipped in and out of first and third person, and past and present tense. The slipperiness of perspective in the novel turned out to be a brillant device to capture the ambiguity of identity and gender as experienced by the protagonist. Eugenides pays a lot of attention to ideas like nature vs. nurture, accidents of birth, genetics. More than just chronicling a migrant family history in the style of a homeric epic, he's also chronicling the inception and progression of the random 5-alpha-reductase mutation that comes to define Cal's way of being. There's a lot of thought put into questions of genetic determinism and environmental factors and how these relate to the formation of identity and I found this more philosophical aspect of the story intriguing. I also loved the tone of this book- it's witty, sardonic and tongue in cheek which acts as a nice foil for the seriousness of many of the events and issues raised by the story. There's quite a bit of word play and metafictional referencing going on- Cal makes a lot of self-deprecating remarks relating his stylized Homeric narrative to his Greek genetic heritage; Cal refers to his financially inept brother only as 'Chapter 11'. The only change I might have liked to see made to Middlesex was greater development of the Julie Kikuchi character. I think the ending would have had much more punch if readers had known more about Julie and the relationship developing in the framing story of the novel.
