I still am not really sure what to completely think: I'd categorize this (after completing it an hour ago) as a work that I greatly admire but mildly enjoyed. I can appreciate the satire, the linguistic prowess, the mind-boggling attention to detail, the lateral narrative and the awesome inventiveness. On the other hand, many of those same characteristics result in a work that is numbingly dense and paradoxically untethered (as an aside, I'm not sure how I feel about the vast footnotes--love/hate at this point in time). Ultimately, I don't know that i could argue against the position of anyone who feels passionately--pro or con--about the work, but I am thoroughly glad I have read it.

** spoiler alert ** She's survived so much but can Mac survive Jericho Barrons? Something big is coming on Halloween (Samhain) and all the others out there like Mac know it. The entire book is a lead up to the night of Samhaim with Mac spending the entire night hiding out. To tell you the truth it was kind of disappointing seeing as the first two books in the series were so good. Oh well ... Dreamfever comes out in January 2010.

This book has already been made popular by Arindam Chaudhary (of IIPM fame) by getting an injunction against the publishing of the chapter on him in India, making Deb into lesser Rushdie (and Arindam a god of some sorts??) The book is a sensitive narration of 5 important typecasts in Modern India - The IT guy, the filthy rich, the naxal/marxist farmer/ the migrant worker and the woman from small towns making a living in India's metros. Deb explores their lives with utmost honesty, and gives us their story in a clear, precise voice, raising some important questions on the way abt life in India post globalization. he may not hv got the answers, but he sure does make u think abt these v important issues. Read it for taking a break in ur life and think abt where r u finally going.
