Audio book. A medieval thriler that takes place in Henry II's reign. Adelia is a young Italian coronor sent by the King of Sicily to investigate the heinous murders of children in Cambridge at Henry's request. The deaths have been blamed on the Jewish population, which complicates things for Adelia, an atheist raised by a Jewish father. Adelia is accompanied by Mansure, her eunich Moorish companion, and an old Jewish friend. Together, the unlikely trio investigate the heinous crimes while trying to avoid the prejudices of medieval England. Well written and interesting for its setting, these thrillers are more graphic than I usually like, but I am still drawn to the characters and their quests to understand themselves as well as solve desperate mystery. This is the first of the series, but I have read others and will likely read more in Adelia's saga.

First of all, the cover for this book is great. It really is the perfect depiction: kneeling figure with two dotted paths, one arising from the head, one descending from the heart. It sets just the right tone for the essays that follow. The essays offer the reader a personal and newly-forming look at Mormonism in the life of the writer. The author brings out insight and questions with poignancy and humor that really hit home for me. I know that part of my strong connection to the book is my strong connection to the author, since he's my brother. But even then, the essays took me to a place inside of him that you have to be invited to attend. And it was a beautiful place. He doesn't take up residence in either of the common narratives (the church is true and makes me happy OR the church is false and leaving it makes me happy). Instead he carves his own valley between the two mountains. And the little monuments he builds gently instruct me. This author is not out to convince or convert. No, it's a very real path, very authentic.
