This was my first theology book by a "modern" author. I suppose I shouldn't say modern, as that word is now associated with the thinking patterns from 1800-2000ish. But some people are getting tired of "post-modern," and even "emerging" has its connotations. This was my first theology book not written by a super-conservative Christian who wants you to wear a tie to church. My first reading (3 years ago) really stretched my thinking about all the issues addressed. Since that time (in which Claiborne and McLaren have become household names), my thinking has stretched a bit. And I can't remember the last time I wore a tie to church. This time through I found nothing very new anymore. It seems as if the concepts in this book have either become the new standard from which everyone else springs off and just assumes to be true, or else it was written when these things were already assumed to be true and was simply a basic primer for those (like me) who were unfamiliar with these concepts and perhaps hostile to anything which may have been seen as "liberal." I was especially touched this time through by Bell's reminder that all truth is God's truth, and so we should claim and embrace truth wherever we find it. If something appears to be true but doesn't necessarily fit our belief system, then we need to change our belief system. Our "belief system" should be flexible enough to allow that. I was also encouraged by the author's recommendation to dig into my soul and deal with all the junk I find there. He states that very few people actually live from their heart, but those who do are the ones who make a difference. I'm not sure how to begin that process, but I know it needs to happen. Other than the content, the book itself is beautiful in its design. More books need to be intentional about being a piece of art instead of just paper in binding.

The book is surprisingly slow given the success of the story on Broadway. I have seen the musical twice and own/have memorized the sountrack, but cannot seem to get through this book! I don't understand!

Thought not as wonderful as the first book in the series, UnWholly is a much more complicated and long novel. It is interesting to see how the characters don't get off easy after the end of Unwind, instead they end up facing many more difficulties and terrifying situations. Soon they will be in the middle of an all-out war. Another hit from Shusterman, who truly knows how to write teen characters.

The giant squid is delighted to inform readers that he is "biggest thing in the ocean." He is bigger than the shrimp, the clams, a crab, and a jellyfish. He continues on comparing himself to various other ocean-dwelling creatures until he comes up against something that causes him to change his statement, but only slightly. This book presents itself as a great read-a-loud. The kids can guess at the upcoming animals as they get bigger. The illustrations are bright and colorful and not too busy, perfect for kindergartners or 1st graders. The surprise ending may even elicit gasps of surprise or giggles. This book goes perfectly with Steve Jenkin's Down, Down, Down: A Journey to the Bottom of the Sea.

This book was not the kind of thing I'm usually into (mainly I prefer specfic and romance) but I liked it. The first half of the story filled me with a sense of dread, but unusually all the menace came from things that were unspoken. I found myself worrying about things that the five year old narrator didn't know to worry about, and feelign sorry for him for things that he didn't realise were bad. I listend to the audio version, which I totally recommend if you can get hold of it because it is really well done. There are several readers (four I think) for the different characters and they all do a fantastic job.

I was fascinated and repulsed by this novel(?). Could this really happen? Somehow I think it could which makes it even more beautiful and repulsive. But, I couldn't finish it. I wanted to give a one-star rating, not because the book wasn't great, but because I really, really didn't like reading something this grim.
