Oh, look, pretentious people making fun of other pretentious people. Also, on what planet is Purcell's "Dido" a great opera? I did finish this and there were a few good parts but I found the French characters' fascination with the Japanese aesthetic sort of odd.

When the bookseller I order from at Powell's Bookstore gave me an advance reader's copy of this book, I let out a squeal. This is Anderson's best novel, in my opinion. I read it in one sitting and have been haunted by the images it left seared on my brain. This novel will definitely be a finalist for my Mock Printz workshop.

I picked up this book expecting an examination of the myths of Thule (which I knew nothing about) and found a travelogue along with some history, but not much about the myths. I barreled through this book as quickly as possible since I'm more interested in pop-anthropology than travelogues (I'd rather go there than read about it). However, now I know where the Thule ski racks come from, although I find I'm disturbed by the choice of the name after the whole Nazi references.

The Conan novel is much better than the short stories. Although it does occasionally read like a series of vignettes loosely tied together, it is still better than reading five short stories in a row in which Conan's various positive attributes are redundantly praised using the same language over and over again. The illustrations in this edition are also far less intrusive than the first volume's. Good stuff, but you're gonna want to print out a map for a bookmark.

I have learned that I am not going to like all of Mieville's books, and this one sounded too hard-science-fictiony. But when I learned that a character in it was sort of a linguist (in the sense that I used to be, someone that studies how language works, not who speaks a lot of languages) I was curious. I didn't exactly like this book. A lot of the language stuff seems kind of bogus, it is too long, and the main character seems oddly flat and emotionless even when describing her own emotions. But the very strange world is so vividly described that it really sticks in my memory.

Sam has never seen anything like what he has witnessed with this latest victim. The deeper Sam investigates, the clearer the Impaler’s plan becomes. Will Sam be able to stop the killings before the Impaler claims him as his final victim? The Impaler is the most recent novel from author, Gregory Funaro. Now having read The Sculptor and now The Impaler, I can say with 100% confidence that I am truly a fan of Mr. Funaro. I really like Sam. He has a great eye for detail that even I did not catch until he starts going with his leads. What I enjoy the most is that Sam and which ever killer he is facing next, are evenly matched. There is a method to both the Sculptor and the Impaler’s madness. They take their jobs seriously and turn it into an art form. The Impaler made his presence known all the way through this book. I do admit that I thought the ending of the final battle could have been better but still, I enjoyed this book a lot. I was horrified, memorized, and almost afraid to go to sleep…all thanks to The Impaler!
