Steinbeck writes the gold of the summer California hills right onto the page. I challenge any reader to finish this book and try not to love like Sam Hamilton, be otherwise like Adam Trask, listen and judge like Lee, or feel as rawly as Cal. Whereas some books are truly delicious like sushi--rich, invigorating, biteable--East of Eden is savory, like the 3 or 4 hour long meal you spend around the table with your family and most meaningful friends. Afterwards you're thoroughly sated and utterly intoxicated. Do not inhale this book--slowly sift and chew. It's one of three in my life that has made me actively change the way I live and go through the world.

I have yet to finish this book in part because of school-related reading I have to do, but I'm enjoying it so far. It does have a tendency to get caught up in itself and the mythical tone Okri uses. It hits you over the head with the fable storytelling and is very slow going.

Schwachsinnige Story: Eine Jungenschule und die hübschesten unter den männlichen Bewohnern müssen sich als Mädchen verkleiden, um den anderen den Alltag zu versüßen. Trotzdem einfach herrlich erfrischend und wirklich urkomisch. Ich liebe alle drei Jungs und ihre Macken und kann immer wieder über die dämlichen Situationen lachen, in die sie geraten.

Sensual. Intricate. Like a strange dream only half-remembered. *looks at review* I can't articulate the appeal of this book at all. Actually, I'm not sure 'appeal' is the correct word. It's like some mild-seeming liquor that gets you thoroughly drunk before you notice. Well. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed Swordspoint. Not only is it set in the same world, it has much the same appeal.
