The two main characters in this book are monoliths. I don't think any book has ever portrayed immortals so realistically as this book does. It's so well-written that you'll fall into a depression right along with the main character. Don't worry, though, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

A little slow at the start but it definitely picked up. Loved the writing style and lines like "We can never go back again, that much is certain. The past is still too close to us." The new Mrs. de Winter (strange we are never told her first name) is a very needy individual and it's amazing to see her transformation in 24 hours when she doesn't have to hide behind the shadow of Rebecca anymore.

A wonderful book, full of sensual magic. And I don't even LIKE sweets! I also recommend her novel HOLY FOOLS, which I read prior to this book. HOLY FOOLS is set in medieval times while CHOCOLAT is supposedly contemporary, but the feeling of the town Harris conjures in CHOCOLAT is timeless.

Good fiction read. It took awhile to get into it, but the book is well written and I wasn't really sure how it would end. That kept me going.
