when i read this book in high school i was so into it. the idea of an apathetic kid just doing what he wants to do. however, when i read this a couple years back i just thought of it as this spoiled rich white kid with money to toss around just being fucking lazy and selfish. i dunno. i guess you can assimilate when you're in the moment.

This was a cute story and the first I ever read from this author. I listened to the audio book and thought the characters were well fleshed out.

I got this from the library and listened in the car during my commute. It was somewhere between two and three stars, definitely good and interesting, but nothing to shout about I guess. I'm glad Dick Van Dyke did his own narration.

Excellent book for moving beyond the "I went to the library to study with my friends" Spanish learned in school/college.

I listened to this audiobook and I loved it. Not only was the story interesting but the readers were excellent!

Someone already said that you either love or hate this book. Well, I'm firmly on the hating side. There are many elements I find lacking, but the main ones (in my opinion) are: the print--slabs of text without paragraphs and even dialogues jammed in without separation, extremely unappetizing to read; characterization--the characters are undeveloped and unconvincing in every aspect; the story--undoubtedly rigorously researched historical period didn't translate into a captivating story and the ending seems insulting for the reader, rushed and without even trying to be convincing. I wish I can get back the time wasted on this book.

The beautiful photographs are the highlight in this informative introduction to polar bears.

The Overlook is Connelly's latest Harry Bosch detective novel. The book was written as a 16 part serial novel for the New York Times Magazine and it shows. I'm a big Bosch fan and I always enjoy reading about him but I am a little disappointed in this book. As one might expect with a serial novel, many chapters are disjointed and Connelly does not focus on character development. Rachel Walling is again back in Bosch's life and while Connelly mentions the relationship, he doesn't do much to develop the relationship and/or play off the tension created when the two are again pitted on opposite bureaucratic sides (Feds vs. LA) in the current investigation. The book is largely plot driven but again, this is a short novel and it isn't overly complicated. (I hate to say it but this has "movie script" written all over it.) The plot does have some interesting twists and plays off the obvious struggles that law agencies face in the increasingly national security/terrorism challenges that continue to confront our nation. All in all-- this is a fun, quick read-- perfect fodder for the beach. Hardcore Connelly fans will enjoy another Bosch novel but don't expect the rich character development and plots that we've come to expect from him. My recommendation: its definitely not worth buying the hardback. Wait for the softback or, better yet, pick it up at the library.

The Hummingbird's Daughter gives a picture of Old Mexico and the way it was. One comes to an understanding of a small part of Mexico's history and its relationship to S.W. United States. The story itself is action filled, colorful, and holds ones interest to the end.
