This is a difficult book to rate and to review. Most of it is fantastic. Moon puts the reader in the mind of the autistic protagonist extremely effectively and raises lots of great questions about what it means to be normal, about disability rights, about ethics and humanity - and then the ending just ruins all of this. I don't know that I would quite recommend this book to anyone because the ending is so disappointing, but I do think it would be fun to teach in a course where we could explore that ending alongside the power of the rest of the book. I just wish I could read it again and choose a different ending.

Loved this book, the characters were so real...and sometimes not so nice. Just a good story, though I expected more at the ending or maybe I was just disappointed that the story was ending.

This was a fantastic book that actually challenged me to READ the words because it was a vocabulary I was completely unfamiliar with. That being said, the language gripped you and made you WANT to figure out what was there and what all the sea-going descriptors meant. I found myself constantly trying to form the mental image of what they were describing and since Maturin's character was new to seafaring, there is a lot of explanatory text to help us newbies along the way. I definitely look forward to reading the second book!

Wonderful! A girl wants to be a witch so she teams up with little blue men- who wear kilts- to fight the evil queen that lives in our dreams. Very funny, with thought provoking questions about reality and dreams. I laughed out loud many times..."Beasties" and "Crivens" the little blue men are violent and these are their favorite words.
