The case Rebus is working is horrific: his investigation of the disappearance and gruesome murder of a child soon turns into the scrambling search to find a serial killer before he takes yet another young girl's life. But despite the unsavory subject matter, Rankin's portrait is so vivid that the city becomes incredibly intriguing. Similarly, the author creates (in what is actually a pretty brief novel) a protagonist that is as complex and multi-dimensional as he is familiar to the mystery reader. In this way, it's no wonder Knots & Crosses spawned what is now an 18-volume series.

This was a fascinating book that not only told the story of Jackson's rise to power and his 8 years in office, but the story of his successors as well. I gained a new appreciation on a group of US Presidents that I had a limited background on, and found a lot to like about these men and gained a new appreciation on there contributions to the country. The book also surveyed many of the sociological, technological, religious, and medical accomplishments of the era. Jackson is considered to be the first president to spend money on scientific advancement and research, and advancements like the typewriter, camera, and train all came about during the "age of Jackson". As the husband of an ex-mormon I found the survey of Joseph Smith's and Brigham Young's importance to the era interesting. This is an era that I will be studying more closely in the future.

Great social commentary - the book is broken into three distinct sections; 1)Outlaw, 2)Reform, 3)Correction - and each section takes you through the same settings with the same characters. Brilliant story telling. I always loved the movie and happy to see it was so true to the book.

Good to be reminded what is happening in other countries regarding religious freedom and basic human rights. Makes me a more caring, thankful American Christian. I've always had my own "problems" with the Chinese govt over their treatment of other countries. Whatever the deal--oil or software, etc--as long as it's good for China, they don't care who gets hurt. Again....my opinion about the Chinese govt, not necessarily about the average Chinese person. They may have laws against media piracy, but they're not enforced because that would only help the person or country who developed the product.....I digress. good book!
