Fun fairytale! It was similar to sleeping beauty, but different! I liked it quite a bit.

Barbara Comyns is very English. And very twisted. I love her writing. Spare but compelling.

After watching Peter and MJ almost end it all, I was in a funk and needed a shot of edgy, big-city mix of cynicism and romance. Taken by the phrase "after two puffs" on the first page, I thought, "This is just the thing!" But the rest of the book was a disappointment - skill and indulgence over honesty. Later I noticed Dave Eggers' enthusiastic testimonial, and thought, "That explains it." But at least I didn't stay up at night any more worrying whether Peter and MJ would make it. No, instead, I was kept up at nights worrying whether cleverness and truth would get back together.

Eyes can be creepy, and the ending was a shocker.

Based on the book flap on this ARC, there will be a blitz of advertising for this book when it comes up. There is a planned teaser trailer, a Facebook campaign, a "viral widget," (what is that?!) and all sorts of other stuff. I have a feeling this is to be the next The Historian. I did not particularly care for The Historian, and I have the same sorts of issues with Deliverance Dane. The author has done a lot of research into the Salem witch trials, and she certainly tries to put it all into the book. (Though not to the extent that Elizabeth Kostova drops in long passages of vampiric research into The Historian.) She also has a very bizarre way of terming things to be "New England" or "Yankee" culture. I have not experienced this before, and I found it odd that seemingly innocuous occurrences were described as being a New England propensity for thrift or something of the like. Maybe this is normal for people from the East Coast- I don't know :-) Another feature that irked me was Howe's random descriptive passages. I like authors writing lush books using lush language. But I feel that sometimes, it can seem forced. Saying that a voice "floats in sans serif font" seems forced to me. Personally, I feel this book is going to get really good reviews due to all the hype surrounding it. And I'm not saying that it wasn't good- it was entertaining and fun to read, though I think it could do with some more editing. The premise of the book is intriguing on its own- a novel written from the assumption that the accused witches of Salem were truly witches. Interestingly enough, this is not a take that I have seen before (Has anyone elseread books with this premise? Good ones?). And the historical parts are compelling. In fact, I much preferred the historical interludes to the modern-day ones. Modern-day being 1991. I'm not entirely sure why Howe decided to set her story in 1991 instead of in 2009; that's a question I'd like to ask her. And generally, I think if you enjoyed The Historian, you will enjoy The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. Also, I think anyone who has the tiniest inkling of interest in American colonial history will be unable to withstand the plethora of marketing around this book. So go for it, and enjoy. And for those of you East Coasters, please let me know if you think the book embues that "New England" personality.

Better than the last Mrs Murphy I read, but not as good as the early ones. And Harry seemed a bit cranky and foolish in this one.

Spare and poetic literary novel about the Appalachians and meth, this is driven by the narrator, a teenage girl named Ree who must track down her father before her family loses their house. She attempts to find him amid the extended, loose clan of kinfolk whose lives are all interwoven with the meth trade.

From the first line of this book, I was sucked in, it was just so powerful. I don't think I have ever read a ghost book quite like it, in fact I am positive I haven't read one like this. Amelia Gray is a cemetery restorer who can see ghosts. However, unlike other ghost stories, her father has pleaded with her not to acknowledge them. By not acknowledging them she stops them from infecting her life and making it hell. She has always managed to keep by her father's rule until she meets Devlin, a haunted policeman, who walks alongside his dead wife and daughter. She is drawn into a world where murder investigations are priority, if not brutal. Amanda aids the policeman, she is struggling to resist by trying to solve the mystery surrounding the symbolism found on each new grave. Can she help to solve the murders without the ghosts realising she can see them. Can she keep the spirit world separate from reality. I love that the ghosts in this book take on such a sinister role. Amanda's resistance to acknowledging them adds an extra chill to this spine tingling novel. This is spookiness at its best. The book is set in Charleston, which gives it its rich Deep South flavouring. There is something intriguing about the blending of the Deep South and the spirit world. Especially with the introduction of cults and orders. Each character's background brings you closer to the killer. The relationship between Devlin and Amelia is unbelievable. You can feel the sexual tension between them dripping off the pages. The intensity of their relationship intertwines effectively with the murder investigation. This book will suck you in on impact. Imagine walking into a book, where all of a sudden, vines start shooting up and wrapping themselves tightly around your body in all different areas as you are pulled down into the plot. Each vine a new twist or a new layer you just were not expecting, until you are gripped so tightly in the story, you have to reach the end for release. That is how this book made me feel. With each new layer, I was on the edge of my seat. In my mind, the same sentence kept repeating, 'Well, I didn't see that coming!' Nearing the end of the book, the plot is so thick, you haven't a clue who the murder is and I felt like I was sinking in a quagmire, never knowing what to expect next or whether I would ever find out the truth. At one point, I thought I knew who the killer was, but the author soon put pay to my theories. The ending of the book tied up all the loose ends beautifully as the killer was discovered. However, the two main characters have unfinished business and I can't wait to watch their paths cross again. This book is brilliantly thrilling, crossing the paranormal novel with a murder investigation. Amanda Stevens admits to being a taphophile (lover of tombstones) and her extensive knowledge of graveyards and gravestones is obvious throughout the book and I found it fascinating the information I learnt whilst reading it. This is a powerful start to a great new series which I love already and I can't wait to read the next installment. I haven't been this excited about a teen series since Twilight!

Pretty nice ending to the series. A little creepy when Edward wants to give her over to Jacob, but nice ending.

Not really my kind of book. I skipped whole sections because of the language. The whole premise is that this woman hates her marriage and she can't get her husband to talk to her.
