A collection of short pieces capturing human experience. What strikes me most is the play of atmosphere on the characters and how one particular character in each tale will influence (often for the worse) the others.

I'm actually only halfway through this one, but think that I am going to need to shelve it for the time being. This is a terrific book, really, but one that I think really only serves theater fanatics and scholars. It's one of the most densely written books I've come across in a while. Not to say the prose is tough--it's just so...damned....detailed. Every single letter Papp wrote to--well, to just about everyone is included, as is every administrative step he took with the Public. The result is a rather slow, dry read that has been helpful for research purposes, but not all that thrilling. So I think I'm done, at least for now.

Not sure what to say about Ortega y Gasset other than that he's a conspicuous elitist, without necessarily being aristocratic or absolutely class-conscious in his elitism; the mass-man is the self-satisfied man, the man who doesn't look beyond himself for meaning or challenge (shades of Lukacs' "transcendental homelessness") -- which is a state of affairs that comes about through the brute fact of plenitude: more people enjoying more goods as their rights (rather than as fruits of their own struggle). Not sure entirely if this will be useful to think about in terms of crowd-theory, but I guess it's nice to see the seething resentment of the crowd in Le Bon become an articulated hope for the coming war with the mass in Ortega y Gasset. (And doesn't that old-style aristo naming convention already makes Jose seem multiple?)

This was a really good book. Seriously, just like Who I Am, this book is written in diary form. It's really, really good. The book sorta starts with Chloe.....this teenage girl who has gone through alot of hurt and she's seen as rebellious. Through the help of her teenage mentor (Caitlin O' Conner who is Chloe's brother's ex-girlfriend), Chloe eventually becomes a Christian and decides to start a sort of punk rock band with her friends. Well, I'll stop there, but this is a really good book.

The book would have been better with more science in it. A quick read about the development of forensic chemistry and Prohibition history.

Beatifully written. Verghese is unnecessarily compared to Salman Rushdie, but he does share some of the magical qualities of Indian stories. This is an epic story of twins and how their extended family, a group melded together in Ethiopia's Missing Hospital, is shaped and transformed by the life of these twins. This is a slow study in relationships, but never boring. The writing alone makes it worth a read.

I usually love his books, but I could NOT get past the dialect and finish this one.

Not as good as the first volume of this series, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. Lots of names and events, but much less of Roosevelt's personality. Looking forward to Colonel Roosevelt, the last in the series and hoping it's more like the first book. This book took almost 10 months to finish.

I could not put this book down. It was a very fast read, and amusing, but also shocking. After reading this, I am very glad I don't eat fast food or a lot of junk food. I am going to try and cut back on the processed food and exercise more. My one complaint with the book were the lack of reference notations in the actual text. Spurlock included endnotes, which I appreciated, but it was a pain to find the specific notation I wanted by the first few words of the line. At least he had citations, unlike Fast Food Nation.
