after having read this book three times, i think i can accurately say that i have read lolita. my copy of this book is quite possibly my most prized posession. i received it as a birthday present and the spring of that year i was lucky enough to take a class with Aleksandr Dolinin, one of the foremost scholars in the world on nabokov. we read this book in class and i have never marked a book up as much as this one. almost every page has insights into his wordplay, the subtle hints to other works, and brilliant puzzles that nabokov incorporated into this book. there are actual pieces of paper stuck into this book where the page margins didn't leave me room to write everything i wanted to say. if i was stranded on a desert island with one book for the rest of my life, this would be it.

I have a feeling this book will be the best and what I actually really expected from the books since the beginning. Please don't get me wrong, I love the books, I really do, but I was always waiting for the books to do more, to go more farther in, to truly be spies. If any of that even makes sense. OH MY GOD!! I absolutely want more books by her written like this. For some reason I feel like this book was more advanced. I was truly satisfied with this book in the series. I really didnt want to put it down, I even took it to work with me, and read the whole thing in two days (I started reading late the day before). If the rest of her books from this series are like this one I will seriously love Ally and Cam forever. This book had me spy to it, not many books can keep me guessing mainly because I can usually see where its going before it even gets there, but this one did. It kept me guessing and wanting to know more, wanting to get to the end without getting to the end, I wanted to know more and for the book not to be over but be done all at the same time. I think the only thing that disappointed me was how fast I finished the book, when i was done i really kept wishing it wasn't over. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How long till the next one?????

It was a fun, cute story. But seriously, she could have cut out about a hundred pages of teas and parties and gotten straight to the point. Also, I found out that the movie "Clueless" is based upon this book. Weirdness.

** spoiler alert ** *I got this book as an ARC from Goodreads FirstReads* This book took me a little while to get into. The writing style actually changes part way into the book, which is a little strange, but the portion after the change was much easier for me to read. The writing at the beginning is beautiful- full of images that are both beautiful and unique. However, those images actually took me out of the story and seemed to slow down the pace of the book. I could tell when Simon Van Booy really started to get into the lives of his characters because the plot suddenly seemed to matter more than the pretty images- finally the book was going somewhere! And then Rebecca, the girl who seems to be the main character, dies. And that was only halfway through the novel. Talk about throwing the reader for a loop... There are 4 "books" and an epilogue- which you don't discover until you reach the end of book one... halfway through the novel. And each "book" is shorter than the previous one. This wouldn't bug me so much except that I got used to book one, where Rebecca was the main character and everything was written in 3rd person narrative. Book two switches to 2nd person narrative as Henry, who is about as depressed as can be after he and George find Rebecca dead. There's even a chunk of book two that isn't narrative at all- it's images of letters Henry sends to George. Book three continues in 2nd person narrative. In book four, Henry has finally recovered, several years later, from his misery, which is a relief partly because being in Henry's head was exhausting and because we're finally back to 3rd person narration. I guess I just felt like the format wasn't consistent enough- every change reminded me that I was reading a book, not experiencing a story. Overall, I thought the book was okay. Not a book I'm likely to pick up and read again though.

These books are chalk full of little things that are truly disturbing, but not in such volume as to make you abandon the main story in order to save your sanity. I get the vague impression, however, that I'm slowly getting desensatized to these things. As much as I'd like to find out how John comes into (and abandons, based on commentary in the short story from Mean Streets) his birthright, I'm seriously considering setting the whole thing aside for the sake of my soul.

I am on a really great roll with fiction choices. This is another astonishingly good book, fable really, set in a tiny town in newly capitalizing Hungary. The leading character is tough to love but, as it turns out, everyone ends up doing just that. The characters are unusual in their depth for such a short novel. The author tells us in his afterword that the characters are composites of himself and his wife which is very juicy in itself.

Bill Bryson writes with a great deal of humor, even when talking about how scared he is of black bears. I was reading the book aloud, and couldn't get through that section for about five minutes, I was laughing so hard.
