This book can help parents and educators open the door for discussions on tolerance and diversity. I highly recommend Not Fat Because I Wanna Be!

This series is just fun. The use of language - the clever puns - the running gags - the clever tie ins to different plot lines... its just a good read. There's nothing deep or meaningful in these books, but you'll find yourself smiling the entire time - sometimes because of the humor, sometimes just in appreciation of the style, and sometimes because of the really clever plot twists. Two caveats: 1) While this is a children's book, it is inappropriate for kids who are too young. Their are some scenes that will scare children, especially in the Grim Grotto. 2) The series peters out at the end. The last two books aren't nearly as engaging as the first 11, and the story lacks anything resembling a proper conclusion. So it will leave a vaguely unsatisfied feeling - especially in light of how well the author wraps up so many of the plot lines and weaves them together. That said, if you're looking for some light reading, I think this series is very enjoyable.

I know a lot of people who really loved this book, but for the life of me I can't understand why. The writing is stilted, the ideas slightly humorous but not well developed, and the basic premise/plot so ridiculously unrealistic that I just couldn't get into it (and this is from a person who is quite willing to suspend disbelief for the notion of psychic robots, teleportation, alien species, multinational conspiracies, time travel, etc.). If you have to read a book by this author, then go with Cryptonomicon. I didn't like that one either, but it was a lot better than Snow Crash.

I really love the characters and the world that are in this series. There is a lot of action and danger. My only problem is that I had a hard time following when she switched bodies or traveled back in time. Other than that I thought it was a great start to the series and I will definitely continue with the next books.
