Julia and Winston have just been captured by the thought police. I thought it was a great twist in the story of how Orwell made Mr. Charrington, an inocent prole, an undercover thought police. I have enjoyed the story thus far. The world Orwell has created is mind blowing. The way society believes everything the party says to be true. After reading this book, I decided that George Orwell is a relatively crazy man. How he thought up such a crazy, mind blowing story is beyond me. Not only did he have to develope a series of characters and a plot, he had to develope a world that was entirely different to ours. Up until the end of the book I really liked Winston. I respected him for his hate of the party and his want for the revolution. I thought it was cool that he not only thought of his hate for the party but actually took steps against it. In the end I thought Winston was going to escape O'Brien with his mind still in tact and would continue his plans against the party. I was very disappointed when he broke down, allowed himself to be brain washed, and ultimately betrayed Julia. I thought that he was stronger and smarter than O'Brien and could be released with his mind still in tact.

This was a fun book, and gave an introduction to sailing. Of course, it made Trixie and her friends out to be some kind of superheroes, as always, but that's what was fun about these books when I was a kid. Sept 2013 ... another fun re-read ... lessons about sailing, kids helping others, all combine to make this a fun book.

I was very moved by the story. It was quite remarkable how these two men met and how both lives were changed for the better. You will need plenty of tissues especially if you have lost loved ones to cancer as I have. Read it, you will be glad that you did.

What a great book. Who knew I would find reading about a midwife and her trial so interesting. It's written from the view of her daughter, so very interesting perspective. Worth the read.

While More Tales seemed more unified than the first Tales I found myself longing for additional characters to widen the circle of people experiencing San Francisco. Maupin touches on the more serious issues of the day such as AIDS, transgender, rootlessness and racism but some of the situations felt hollow. Michael really came alive in this sequel. His emotions, longing and relationship with his parents resonated.

This is really an amazing book! It's so exciting, almost all the time. But that's what makes it a bit less great than the first, the story gets kind of slow sometimes, but that's not often, and there are some part that annoys me. But aprt from that (and that's really just a smal part) this book is great! And the end... It almost felt like the book wasn't finished, like there should be some more pages. But at the same time it was a really fitting ending. But now I have to read the third soon, I can't wait to know the rest of the story! Second read: I seriosly can't belive it took me three months to read this last time, this time it took me less then a week. That week do contain a couple of reading 'till the middle of the night days, but anyway.

Lost in a Good Book is hard to describe. It’s the second in a series by Jasper Fforde about an alternate universe where the main character, Thursday Next (yes, that is her real name) can read herself into her favorite book. How cool is that? Haven’t you ever wanted to be a part of your favorite book? So there are lots of allusions to classic literature, but there’s a lot of science too. It’s probably mostly technobabble - and I wouldn’t really know, as I am and always will be a Humanities Major - because there’s time travel and shifting dimensions and things like that, but there’s also entropy and I know enough to know that that’s actual science. Anyway, the best comparison I can make is to the music of PDQ Bach. PDQ Bach CDs are parodies of the classical music genre, poking fun at everything from Copland to Tchaikovsky to medieval madrigals. The Thursday Next series has all kinds of allusions to great literature. And with both of them, I always get the feeling that I’m missing some of the really good jokes, because I just don’t know enough about classical music or classic literature. That being said, the book is quite good, and I’d recommend it to just about everybody that likes reading and literature. Yes, even my mother. Just be sure to read The Eyre Affair first, as it is the first in the series.
