I didn't complete the entire book, rather I skimmed through the more boring parts. After reading Voices from the Dust and a few others that are much better, this one was a hard read. It is a translation of Spanish writing from the 15th century so it is laborious to read. Many sentences run on for half a page or more. I just didn't have the energy to plow into it despite being fascinated by the topic.

Drags too much... And what's worse is it's fiction so you don't even know whether he actually went to Afghanistan and suffered all that he's glamorised in the book. Character sketches are good but the Indian guys are a bit overdone.

Read the Old Man and The Sea a long time as a child as part of an exam syllabus... did not fully appreciate it than... was about 12 years old.. Now grabbed For whom the bell Tolls... and am enjoying it so far... Spanish Civil War is the context.. Robert Jordan sounds cool while he goes on his mission to blow up the bridge... very unique style of writing.. kinda repetative... but wonderful characterisation of the local guerillas republicans... and their activities...

I loved the cover of this book: Honey Nut Cheerios in a bowl of milk with Chopsticks. That’s why I picked it up. Also, I was curious about the title; what exactly IS ‘the foremost good fortune? (the author does tell you). I started reading. The story opens in Portland, Maine. Being a Mainer, how could I put the book down after reading THAT? (Well, the answer, of course, is that I couldn’t). You may not be able to either. Susan is married with two young boys. Her husband was drawn to live in China, and she was drawn to live with him. The China decision was deferred for years, but eventually came due when her husband's job required him to work there for two years. What could she do? What I had read about this book in advance was that Susan moved with her family to China and shortly thereafter discovered lumps in her breast, so I was reading pretty far into the book, wondering why there was no talk of this before it is finally mentioned. When it finally is mentioned it is already in progress, anticlimactic almost. After that, the cancer is sort of a backstory. The book itself was very interesting; definitely worth reading. The only criticism that I have is this: there is a lot of talk about all of the nuances, trials, and tribulations of learning to speak Mandarin which I could have done without, but maybe other readers would find interesting.

Each chapter of this book focuses on one of five family members (4 siblings and a cousin) in turn. Beginning in the early 1970s and ending in 2001, the chapters are mostly joyless vignettes. The alternating voices and time/information gaps made it hard to settle in and enjoy the book. There is simply not the flow that would make this feel like a novel. The strongest points for me were that the writing felt true, and each of the protagonists was well defined and individualistic. Lacking a clear plot, I’d say this book is about unmet expectations for happiness among middle-class people whose ancestors worked hard to provide them with the privilege of that expectation.

Amazing! I absolutely love Harry Potter, although apparently some people find the first two hard to read. Just get through it because you will be so missing out if you stop at this one!
