A departure from the Harry Bosch books, The Poet features a reporter investigating his brother's death. If you are intimidated by the long shelf of Connelly books this is a great place to start.

this is a really interesting analysis of what causes people to vote for a party that directly opposes their economic needs.

Received from Cindy, who found it in a used bookstore in Florida. So old it cost 75 cents and has no bar code. Good story with fun characters. I begin to see an emerging theme in Heyer stories; this is the second one I've read where an older gent befriends a much younger woman (girl) and aids her in escaping from an unhappy home with a domineering aunt.

** spoiler alert ** Oprah Kitap Kulübünün kitapları nasıl diye okumaya çalıştım. Ancak Afrika’nın çok kötü yönlerini gösteriyor. Kitabın başında bıraktım.

"Room" is a book about the bond between a mother and son, and their survival in the room where "Old Nick" keeps them. At the beginning of the book, you're constantly wondering who Ma and Jack are, who "Old Nick" is, and how they got there. As you get to know the characters, you are sympathetic to their situation, and respect "Ma" for how deeply she cares for her son, and how she tries to make the best out of the situation they're in. And you also feel grateful for the life you have...and had as a child. I thought the ending was just right and the author did a good job tying all the facts throughout the story together.

ROUGH REVIEW: This book made clear the intelligence of a child rather than a small adult. It was a fantastic read. However the ending wasn't ideal and therefore I only gave it four stars. To be continued...
Had the personal stories of Mukherjee's patients not triggered fits of hypochondria in me, I would have easily given it all the stars :) Like Andrew Solomon's "The Noonday Demon," this is an essential (and for the most part highly readable) volume on a disease that will affect the lives of nearly every American, whether directly or within one's social/familial network. Best to know how we've arrived at this point in medical history. I did occasionally get lost in some of the more technical discussions (ex. RNA/DNA replication, the alphabet soup of chemotherapy acronyms), but there's a brilliant summary of all the historical developments in the modern world's understanding of cancer near the end that crystallizes all of the book's insights. It's well worth the fits of anxiety to make it to that point. Mukherjee does a fine job of demystifying cancer and providing a hopeful outlook for the future, while never shying away from the real terrors and ordeals of its diagnosis and treatment. I don't think I've ever found a book (let alone a piece of non-fiction) to be equal parts frightening and comforting, but here it is.

After reading the buzz about this book in the lit blogs and beyond, I had high hopes... The story is actually very interesting, but somehow she has written it without emotion, without a compelling tone. Very spare, dispassionate writing that left me cold.

The only compelling part of this book was the development of the author's relationship with her husband post Eat Pray Love. Felt the rest was generally uninteresting and focused on the sociology of marriage.

i couldnt really read any part of this book without thinking about how someone like this would fit into the DSM-IV criteria for personality disorders.
