Kay, I'm not going to lie. The references to the Mexican literati went straight over my head. But how juicy the rest of the novel was. There were those intense moments of being caught up in the moment, and the sadness of being alone, and the intense need to travel. On top of that it was the strangest narrative form I've seen in years. I think there must have been forty or fifty narrators. Good stuff.

Bad book. Bad bad bad. I was so optimistic and then to find out that the reason Dracula is killing people is because he is a (SPOILER) big book lover and wants to save hard to find and out of print manuscripts. Oh, the disappointment of this book. I wanted a good vampire scare and I got a PBS commercial on the importance of reading. Save your time and read Interview with a Vampire

A very engrossing book. I had a hard time putting it down. The story really evokes China while not seeming derivative. I loved the main character and found all of the principals very three dimensional. Recommended for anyone who likes historical fiction and fantasy.

Quick read full of excitement and unexpected sweetness. My edition had a great interview with Gruen at the end about how she came to write the book, which I also enjoyed.

I wanted to like this novel so much more than I did. The writing is beautiful, but for the most part the characters and the story left me cold. The novel has some wonderful moments, and I did find Morrison's use of point of view interesting, but overall this was much less engaging than her best work (which, unfortunately, is most of the rest of her work).

While I do not think this is Barbara O'Neal's best book, I still enjoyed it. The beginning was a bit choppy and slow, but the second half pulled me into the story. I give it 3.5 stars.

Reading this book for the first time (as a teenager) was a magical experience for me. It was the first time I had ever been so deeply submerged in a book that I literally felt dazed and disoriented when it ended and I had to return to reality. They were so real for me--Ash and Juli, Wally and Zarin, Biju Ram and Hira Lal. Leaving their world--leaving India--at the end of the book was painful. The story is about Ashton Pelham-Martyn, English by birth but born in India. He spends his childhood believing he is Induan, and only finds out the truth when he's eleven. This is when the person that he thought he was is separated into two distinct people. One is his traditional English persona which is forced on him in his later childhood, and the other is Ashok, the person he was in his earliest memories of himself. Ash's journey to self-realization is a torturous one, and encompasses the full spectrum of human experience: love, friendship, loyalty, responsibility, despicable acts of cowardice and treachery, and acts of incredible heroism. Toward the end of the book is a battle scene based on a real historic event. Usually I find protracted battle scenes tedious, but this time . . . this time, I was completely caught up in it. I was THERE with Wally, and every desperate sortie, every stratagem, and every loss tore my heart out. I have never read another battle scene since which captivated me as this one did. This book is storytelling at its grandest. It doesn't hurt that Kaye constructs sentences designed to thrill an English teacher's heart, so smoothly and effortlessly do they flow. If you have not yet experienced this epic tale, what are you waiting for?
