Does this count as memoir? Some of it does, but it's at least half comedy bits. Disappointingly short, but I guess part of comedy is leaving the audience wanting more.

hilarious! thinly-disguised auto-biography at its best. you'll never watch return of the jedi the same way again.

A nice travel book, pre Eat, Pray, Love, with similar ideas and observations of self.

To quote an esteemed LC history professor on the technical difficulties of pre-modern navigational technology: "Nowadays, you'd refer to that as being lost. But they actually thought they could get somewhere." Shortly after people discovered that the world was round and wanted to sail around it, they realized that they had no way of telling how far they'd gone and how close they were to where they wanted to be, as opposed to how close they were to the Bermuda Triangle, for example, or the giant pointy sneak-attack rocks that were about to sink their ship. The kingdoms of Enlightenment Europe were basically racing against each other to find a way to calculate longitude that worked better than eyeballing the north star with a sextant on a pitching deck, which pretty much didn't work at all. Longitude is the story of John Harrison, the man who invented the first clock accurate enough to keep time at sea, allowing navigators to know exactly where they were on an East-West scale. Harrison, and the reader, get sucked into a whirlpool of royal and scientific politics, which can get very dirty. Also has a cameo appearance by everyone's favorite benignly insane monarch, George III.

I thought this was a really good book. It seemed long but that helped you realize how helpless he felt. I would definitely recommend this book over the movie. I don't know if it's just easier to read about these atrocities than see them portrayed on screen but I didn't like how graphic the movie was.

Really good book. Lots of twists and turns, but felt like the author rushed the ending.

I really liked it, but felt I missed the "history' between some of the characters since I did not read the first book. But, all in all, a fast read and overall believable plotline. I felt the twists were not that surprising.

This is a fantastic history book-- it presents sides of the American Revolution that are never presented in traditional history and it is told with such flair that it reads like fiction. McCullough's depiction of George Washington is absolutely amazing. He captures Washington's brilliance and serendipity as a leader while also highlighting his flaws- insecurity about his lack of higher education and his questionable military decisions. All in all, this is a great read.

This book reinforced my previous experiences enjoying the genre of "participatory journalism." (The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World anyone?) I learned more than I expected to and a lot more in depth than I expected about memory. It was a book that made me glad that I can highlight passages on my Kindle - something I don't often do. Beyond the nerdiness of the subject matter that I can appreciate, there were a lot of different components of this book that I think could make it appeal to a pretty wide, inquisitive audience. It made me think a lot about how I remember things, and, how I sometimes to tell my students ways to remember things. (Yes, I managed to think about my calc class and integrals while reading this book....it's time for summer!) I also learned a lot about the origins of memory - something I had never really considered before. I am admittedly not one that is much into history, but I found Foer's writing about the history of memory engaging enough to get into it - even the greek stuff, which I typically especially detest. I would recommend this book for anyone who's interest is peaked by reading the description on the back of the book. It was better than I expected.

If you throw an I Spy, a Where’s Waldo, and a fiction picture book into your children’s lit blend-o-matic and hit puree, what you get is Look! A Book! – pure entertainment in printed form. The spreads alternate between rhyming text set against bold colors and incredible seek and find illustrations. The conclusion of the book lists many more objects to go back and locate, ensuring hours of happy hunting. Staake’s bright, abstract style has never been more detailed, with wildly creative results. The verdict on this book is short and sweet. Get it. -T This is a great puzzle book--I agree with T! ~s
