a solid historical narrative of the events surrounding the murder of lincoln. The length of the book is paced by well crafted characterizations of historical figures and a focused narrative that balances meticulous description with thoughtful supposition.

This lardful lump of language is heavy-handed and implausible. It took me nearly six weeks to finish, when it should have taken one to two weeks at most. Some days I could only read two or three pages. Not only is the story slow-moving and tedious, but the author's agenda is overpowering. Whenever he wants to be sure you get his point, he spells it out by putting it fully formed into the thoughts of one of the characters. I felt like I was constantly being bludgeoned with authorial intent. The story becomes progressively more implausible after Araceli is left alone with the two children of her employers. It's just not realistic to think that her only solution would be to take them on a long trek across L.A. with only a hazy destination. The author makes a special point of letting us know throughout the book that Araceli is not dumb. So why would she do something so ridiculous? For all his heavy-handed treatment, it's hard to say after finishing the book exactly what points the author was trying to make. Unfair distribution of wealth is nothing new. Unfair treatment of Mexican immigrants is not news, either. Was he trying to say that Mexican immigrants are intelligent and hard-working and deserve some respect? Maybe. For me the message was cloudy and the story was not enjoyable.

I heard about this book on Fresh Air on npr, and the interview was so interesting I had to read the book. A really fascinating look at rats, yes, but also the history of New York City.

i was not all that impressed with this book. it didn't have nearly the same effect on me as "a million little pieces" did.

Fun young adult fantasy. I loved that the villain was Ereskigal (from Sumerian mythology) and Oscar really enjoyed the Golem (he was pretty funny). Oscar wants to keep up the with series... I don't really want to read another one to him, so we will have to see how persistent he is.

I feel I have something of a love-hate relationship with this book. It's clever, insightful and funny, and yet I couldn't help feeling frustrated the further into the book I got. At one point, Kate Fox mentions that she's never criticised for being overly negative, only for being deemed to be too complimentary to the English. However, in an obvious attempt to avoid being `too complimentary', it seems she's gone too far in the other direction. I feel she's excessively critical of the English, referring to what she calls our "social dis-ease" as a "condition" that "infects" various parts of our lives, and over the course of the book, this negativity began to seriously grate on my nerves. She also refers to this `dis-ease' as an inability to be like normal people, with her barometer of normality being Romance language countries such as France, Spain and Italy. What about the rest of the world? The author frequently makes sweeping generalisations, apparently basing these on research predominantly in the south of England and involving small groups of participants. Many of her observations seem inaccurate or out-dated, and the author's class snobbishness also became rather irritating over time. All in all, there are some positives to this book but they're outweighed by a rather lopsided view of England and English society.

I decided to read this book because it sounded interesting and unique. The best part, in my opinion, was the strange vintage photographs and how the author wove them into the story. The story itself, as stated in several other goodreads reviews, was a lot like a retelling of X-Men, edited for the benefit of children. What I found a little weird (ok, a LOT weird) (view spoiler) Overall, it's an okay read. Younger readers will probably enjoy it, but for adults it's a little lacking.
** spoiler alert ** 2 stars for the sex more than anything... I really wanted to love this...and there were parts that I did, but overall I was disappointed. Erin is kickass at the start... a woman that knows, and gets just what she wants. Her submissive nature is hinted at -- but only slightly, when she begins her relationship with Todd. They seem to fall apart because he cannot admit to liking certain things... which, in truth, aren't really all that kinky. There's a huge time shift -- years gone by, and this isn't this first time the author does it. Her time shifts became more than a little annoying. At this point I see the characters as doing a complete 180. I understand people change with time, but DAMN! these are entirely different. I could understand, to a point, the D/s aspect of them, as it was hinted at BUT TAKING A THIRD PERSON INTO THEIR BED?!? No.... And for Todd to allow his best friend to touch, lick, kiss him? That one was utterly perplexing. Nowhere in this book is it hinted at that Todd was interested in men. Not. At. All. To me, yes, it was deliciously hot, but there were too many points where I launched the book across the room because the plot/character trait just didn't fit with what she had written earlier in the story. I do have the other books in the series, but I don't know whether to try them or not.
