I had actually read this book a few years ago, but its reimaging as a TV series by the BBC (and shown in America on HBO) got me back into wanting to read all the books. I had stopped after the first three, but now I want to read them all. I guess this is a bit of a warning, then. Set in Botswana, the book is basically a collection of short stories or vignettes with Precious Ramotswe as the main character. Mma (term of respect like Madame) Ramotswe was luck in that she had a loving father who adored her. Upon his death, he left her his herd of cows in the hopes that she would use the money raised from the herd to do whatever she wanted. She did just that. She left the village she grew up in and moved to a nearby city. It is there that she set up the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, allowing her to be Botswana's first and only lady detective. At first things are quiet even after hiring a well qualified secretary (Mma Mikutsi), but after she takes some minor cases involving cheating husbands, she finds a great deal of interest in her services. Each mystery allows the reader to get a better idea of life in rural Africa, particularly without our biases relating to poverty and hunger. The mysteries are not the high suspense murder mysteries we are so used to, but they are intriguing. Mma Ramotswe has cases involving the finger bone of a child, a cheating husband who went missing after finding God, a doctor who seems well qualified some times while being inept others, and the daughter of a local Indian merchant who seems to be looking for love without her parent's involvement. While the pacing is slow compared to most mysteries, it really works with the style of the stories. The imagery helps the reader feel what it is like to live in Botswana. This is supported by the fact that many of the issues Botswanans face form a backdrop for the stories to be presented on. AIDS, colonial history, and local beliefs all play a role in different points in the tales. This is definitely a great book to curl up with!

For me, this is an easy read book. I book you buy becuase it humors you and you want a good laugh while it takes you a little more than a day to read. I really thought that this book was going to be like that. I was sadly mistaken. This book was funny but also had a love story you can't help but fall for. The main character is about one of the most funiest book characters I have read. I defintenly recommend this book if you want a book that will humor you as well as have a interesting plot.

second book in the homecoming saga, again, it was just okay. it really did very little to move the plot of the story along though. it felt like a filler book, a book that could have really been written in maybe a couple chapters of another book. that is to say, it didn't seem to drag on. orson scott card has a talent for never making a book feel like that. still, by the end, i said to myself: what was the point of that book?
genious. captures the burden of guilt perfectly from what i remember.

I usually don't read mysteries, but this involves gambling so I was powerless to resist. An addictive series, so watch out.

I have to admit that I struggled through parts of this book. Even though it is almost 500 pages long, it is written in a very slice-of-life style. It felt like a series of short stories rather than a novel. This would have been okay, except that I felt like it just wasn't going anywhere. It really comes together at the end, though. Betty Smith does a beautiful job of coming full circle. In the end, the book felt like a beautifully painted portrait of the main character. The author's writing style is unique and easy to read. So, bottom line, the book is sometimes slow and hard to slog through, but worth finishing.

One of my favorites (I'm a 1, 4, 6 girl, myself), and a turning point in the series. And not because someone DUN DUN DUN dies, but because we start to see that there are real consequences. That like, evil is, you know, really bad, and Dumbledore can't just sit Harry down and explain away all the darkness. Oh, and the crushes begin. Squeammm! Theys just growin' up all over the place in this 'un!
