good but not great read. interesting story, nicely fleshed out with details about fishing and Maine. characters were well drawn.

I thought the first page was funny because it starts with "I am Sam" and that seems so completely taken by "Green Eggs and Ham"-- I almost expected the next page to read "Sam I am." Anyway, I liked that this was educational in a simple way; I could see a little kid liking this book a lot. I also liked the absolute simplicity of the drawings. Not sure why that is, but it's true. I also thought it was a fun twist that the car driver is a bus driver by occupation.

Loved the characters, loved the story, loved how much I grew to hate Zenia...a good read for women. (but don't bother with the recent made for TV version by the CBC - doesn't even come close to doing this book justice!) In my Atwood top 5.

I don't remember well what I didn't like about this book, but I'll give it a shot. This seemed to me to be esentially a young adult novel in terms of the broad themes and reactionary tone. I also think that because it was so built up, and everyone in the US was reading it simultaneously, I was bound to hate it. And I did. If you are looking for a moderate, intelligent introduction to the Afghan people, look elsewhere.

It made me want to go out and get a kid. Very touching

David Mitchell has been criticized for his "pretenious" narrative style, which I have to agree with to some degree, but I still read this novel (really a collection of connected novellas) in a day and a half. His ending line is also one of my all-time favorites...

I have mixed emotions about this book. The writing was very good and the topic enough to keep me engrossed and wanting to read it. However, I was quite put off by the frequent dropping of the F bomb. I also had mixed emotions about the characters, going back and forth between liking and disliking them. I thought I had the book figured out from the prologue, but the author still managed to throw in a curve I wasn't expecting. I did, however, figure out the lawyer's secret with why he has the service dog long before it was revealed in the book, although I enjoyed his noncomittal, witty come-backs throughout the book every time he was asked what the dog was for. I thought it was interesting that the story was told from so many different perspectives, each main character having a chance to tell the story from his/her point of view. I thought the change of font for each character was odd, though. I did wonder through the whole book how things would be wrapped up in the end and wasn't prepared for the few little twists thrown in at the end, which, to me, is a sign of a good author - if I can't see it coming, and it makes sense and isn't far-fetched, then I like it. I haven't seen the movie but have heard how different it is from the book, so I'm not sure if I want to see it because I don't see why Hollywood would think they needed to change Ms. Picoult's plot. Again, the topic intrigued me and I was able to relate to both sides of the scenario enough - how would I be if it were one of my children dying, but how would I feel if I was one of the children? - that that kept me engrossed as well. Again, I had mixed emotions but thought it a well-written book.

The author writes plainly, a style I enjoy. He does, however, write with a noticeable bias, preferring all things Roman and American. The topic proves too massive for the 150 page pamphlet. In an effort to give some kind of perspective to an otherwise poorly written book, the author writes an introduction and conclusion - mostly personal opinions - about what he thinks the book conveys. These prove to be the most interesting part of the book. The other 130 pages are just descriptions of cities. Reason to read: Facts. Introduction/Conclusion. Recommendation: Go to your local bookstore and enjoy the 20 good pages over a cup of coffee. They can use the traffic.
