This book was a unique gem among so many carbon copies. What impressed me most about it was not that it had an enthralling story, though it did, but the quality of the writing. Very well done.

I love Murakami, and had very high hopes for this novel. The thing is, not only did he meet my expectations, he exceeded them. This is one of the best books I've read in the last ten years, easy. I don't know how he does it.

Tracy McMillan has written a wonderful memoir, one of the best I've read (and I learned a lot from it). I read a piece of hers on HuffPo, thought it was brilliant, and went right out and got her book. She's written for Six Feet Under and United States of Tara. As it says on the cover of the book, she had a pretty tough(and unusual life): her father was a pimp and drug dealer, and was in jail for most of her life. Tracy was shuffled from foster parent to foster parent, survived several marriages and relationships...and somehow managed to come out the other end as a real mensch.

I have to give a review as I like this book. I didn't love it as much as I love Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, and the heroine here is different from Jane Austen's usual spunky woman who are always ahead of their times. But this book is Jane austen's last novel and is already past the Classical-chick lit (that's what I usually call Jane austen's other novel to non-Jane austen readers - to sell it to them but I'm not degrading Austen's novels by doing so. She is one hell of a chick-lit writer that wrote about it two centuries before the word chick lit was formed.) phase - this graduated to more mature tones and that's what i like about Persuasion.

The place to visit in this book are all places i would love to visit as well. The problem was, my problem was that reading this was like a pipe dream to me. In my current standing, it is unlikely that I will have an oppurtunity to take my children to most of the places listed. I had thought it was going to be more along the lines of great vaction spots that were more kid focused or family (pocket) friendly. Some of the places were, a lot to me were not.

This one left me with mixed feelings. Daniel Harris offers up some hilarious anecdotes about his year in drag--his quest for a wig is side-stitchingly funny--as well as some incredibly astute insights into what goes on between our ears regarding what we do betweeen the sheets. At the same time, the underlying story is a rather sad and depressing account of a man confronting the remorseless advance of time, the realization that his life has not exactly lived up to his own expectations, and a crushing sense of lonliness which he attempts to stave off through a series of one-night stands. Diary of a Drag Queen definitely has it's moments, but it's not something to pick up if you're looking for a light-hearted read--it's too dark for that.
