The Dark Is Rising (The Dark Is Rising Sequence) by Susan Cooper (2007)

I laughed out loud many times--it's a really fun read. There are two books going on here, a coming of age memoir and a collection of anecdotes about her anthropological outings and interviews with very famous people. I skipped the opening blow-by-blow of her teen years, but once she hit her 20s and started working at Rolling Stone, in NYC in the late 80s, I was all-attention. Her writing is engaging and intimate; sometimes she reveals a little too much. But her evening with Barry White (right after a painful breakup) is simply priceless! Her abduction by Ben Affleck makes a good point. And her visit with Loretta Lynn at her house is really lovely. Here's the thing: she has this wide-eyed, aw-shucks way of explaining her rise at Rolling Stone--she basically lucked into everything--and I don't buy it. I understand the chronic outsider-feeling, but come on. You don't get to interview ridiculously famous people for the overwhelmingly male-dominated Rolling Stone by being a soft, bland pushover. You just don't. It's ok to be ambitious, something she hasn't discovered yet. All in all, a really really good read. You will laugh and learn something. Enjoy!

A true life novel about Jeanette Walls' grandmother. Quite a formidable woman. Walls also wrote the memoir The Glass Castle, so if you liked that, you'll enjoy this.

Scary. I often listen to audio books to help me fall asleep... I learned quickly that this was one I needed to reserve for daytime.

I feel like I've read a lot of these Misery Memoirs (or ones masquerading as novels). This one stands out. The writing is crisp, factual, and unsentimental; you get the sense, as a reader, that the narrator is exactly as tough as she pretends to be and can handle her charming but ultimately worthless, alcoholic father and her self-absorbed, whiny, sugar addict of a mother. All the same, I couldn't go to sleep last night until I'd read to the happy ending that I was sure was waiting for Jeannette and her siblings, and I wasn't disappointed.

This book is a great resource both for couples struggling with infertility and for their friends who want to support them. Sandra Glahn and her husband struggled with their infertility for many years, and Dr. Cutrer was her OB. Both are Christians, so this book has the personal perspective of a Been-There-Done-That mom, the expert medical advice of a professional, and the spiritual focus of believers.

I wish I had found this book when I was started seminary. By far the best introduction I have found of the philosophical constructs upon which Christian doctrine rests. Philosophy majors may roll their eyes at the limited scope of the book because Allen uses philosophy only in service to theology. But for those of us who care little for philosophical study for its own sake, the book is a welcome edition. Allen covers Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Nominalism, Humanism, Rationalism, Empiricism, Kant, Hegel, Existentialism, Phenomenology, Analytic Philosophy, and others. I did not find as much to help with current variations of postmodern theology. Nonetheless, an essential read before church history, Christian doctrine, and historical theology courses. Or for rapidly aging pastors who still miss seminary.
